This book is broad and shallow, but impeccably indexed and thoughtfully curated. It's also beautifully and concisely written.Everything is organized into topic with detailed outlines, so that you can pick and choose as needed. So many books (see any Tim Ferriss book) throw everything and the kitchen sink with no focus or filter just to fill pages and put out another crappy round of sales; they're all fluff and the meat they contain is so basic that the author tries to pass it off as something complicated and essentially passes off mystique as value. Not the case here. I have a very sensitive BS meter and it wasn't triggered at all. Everything included is purposeful, and while there isn't much of any depth, this is more like what you'd get from an actual MBA (minus the network) - a big picture view and the memory/awareness of what to consider and whether to look it up when the time comes around. The only caveat is that this is all meat, so this is a book to study and write notes on a few times and memorize. As a techie-turned-entrepreneur who likes clear APIs and expects good crunch-bang documentation (think C++ interface guides), this is the perfect format and just what I was looking for. If you want a lot of depth, you'll have to sacrifice scope and go for a book that covers one or two topics. For what it is, this is about as good as it gets (and I've read TONS of books on business, organization, 'self-help', marketing, negotiation, etc.).Thanks Josh for putting this out.

Think of this book as a summary of several topics related to managing a business. The book is somewhat divided into 3 parts:Part 1 talks about the parts of the business: value creation, marketing, sales, value delivery and financeThis is where the book excels in my opinion. As I said it is only a summary, but a very useful one for someone just beginning.Part 2 is about the human side of the business and is only superficial which is understandable because the subject would take several tomes to be adequatelly covered.Part 3 is about working systems (analyzing, optimizing) is also superficial. Again it only covers the main topics as a summary. What I also like about the book is the bibliography which is extensive enough to keep you busy for at least a year or two of reading material. The title is somewhat misleading. You will not master the "art" of business, but it will surelly get you started. Overall, a nicelly done book for people trying his or her first steps in understanding what a business is.I'd have given it 5 stars if the footnotes were on the same page cos I dont like going back and forth to the end of the book in search for them, also if there was a hardcover version available and if some topics were more deeply covered (more technical detail), specially the 1st part of the book which deals with the Value Stream.

Pros: good overview of MBA principles, and a good read for anyone prior to an MBA (to help you understand what you are getting into, and inform your career recruiting decisions)Cons: none. Pretty good.Overall: I would buy it again. I don't know that it is a stand-out over the other handful of highly rated MBA books, but it is still a solid overview. You won't go wrong buying it.

Great book! Obviously it's not a replacement for a 2 year MBA program, but it's certainly worth a read before you drop six figures on a degree. This book is a great overview of many business topics and will help you identify which topics you need to learn more about. It also provides several other resources to learn about those topics more in-depth if you think you're weak in a topic. My only wish was that the book had more case studies from the author's clients rather than focusing on some examples based on his own life. But that didn't happen too much.Still a great read and a good reference book on business topics.

oh how i wish i had read this when i started my business years ago. i read several books a month (used to read about 4 books a week!) and this one is one of my favorites of all time. SO MUCH info, simply put. i love this writer's style - no bull, just simple, striaghtforward. i really really really wish i had known about it about 6 years ago but better late than never. essential reading. this is one of the only books i got from the library and then ended up buying it for my kindle even though i'd already most of it. it's that good.

I teach MBA classes, he is correct and quite comprehensive, if he can add some exercises and problems to some of the chapters, like financial analysis, this book will become the one textbook MBA degree. It was a nice refresher for me. Great for entrepreneurs who need the application more than a piece of paper.

Best book I’ve read in 2017 and 2018. I read about 10 business books a year. This is an organized, easy to read book with go-to advice. Also, you can jump around as needed to get main points. The book is designed to facilitate you returning again to again to look at different topics. I’ve recommended it several people. The book is just smart. The quotes are priceless at the top of each chapter. I’ve already incorporated some of the general principles in the book to up my game. It’s on my office side-table. I generally don’t think I learn anything really new in a business book - this one surprised me.

#29,345 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Loved this book. Very good information on the remarkable Mrs Winston Churchill. Does not whitewash her charecter flaws. She was very critical of her mother in law, Jenny Churchill for her nglect of her children. But she herself was a distant and aloof mother of all of her older children, who all had major problems with alcohol, drugs, depression, mental illness and suicide. She did get it right with her last child, Mary.Clementine was a devoted and diligent advocate for her husband, Winston. It is hard to imagine that he could have overcome the obstacles he placed in his own way, without her help. Winston was notoriously oblivious and obtuse about the feelings of others. This would have been a career killer if he had not had a wife who was able to influence and get him to become more self aware.Strangely enough her friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt, was reflective of two women who had a lot in common. Both women came from arisocratic families. Both had were troubled with severe insecurity that tthey overcame to become major personalities in their own right. Both women were also the "Conscience" of their husbands. The difference between them is that Clementine's relationship with Winston was a love match. Eleano'rs relationship with FDR's was notably a platonic friendship after his affair with Lucy Mercer. Winston remained devoted to Clementine and quite dependent on her for the rest of his life. Winston would have driven most women crazy, he was a very difficult man, and it was probably the best decision he ever made to marry Clementine.

Couldn't rave enough about this biography of the woman who shared Winston Churchill's life and really became his mainstay in all things. This book really fleshes out the life of this beautiful, aristocratic, well-intentioned woman, who nevertheless had real human frailties (for example, difficulty bonding with her own children and life-long insecurities about financial instability that came from a bohemian upbringing with little family money) and who struggled through all, ultimately successfully, to be "useful" to her husband and to her country. Very nicely written, quite informative and, surprisingly, a rather fast read for a book totaling approx. 400 pages. I would say this is among the top best five or so books that I have read in the last year. One of the few books I was really sorry to see end. Very highly recommended.

After seeing the movie, The Darkest Hour, about Winston Churchill, I was enchanted by the character of his wife, Clementine Hozier Churchill. I picked up Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill by Sonia Purnell to learn more about the wife of one of Britain’s most famous prime ministers. I found the story of Clementine (pronounced Clementeen) truly fascinating.Clementine was born into a socially prominent by cash-strapped family. Both parents were sexually promiscuous and it is rumored that Clementine and her three siblings are not the biological children of her father. This biography takes you from her birth, her childhood and details her fascinating life. Her marriage to Winston was especially interesting and she is said to have managed Winston in the same way that Edith Roosevelt managed Theodore. Clementine’s control was done behind-the-scenes with grace and tact. Winston would have probably not been the great leader he became without Clementine by his side.It was especially thought-provoking to read the comparisons and interactions between Clementine and Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Clementine preferred to work in the background, although at least on one occasions, Eleanor pushed her to the forefront. But I did feel that Purnell was unfairly critical of Eleanor and downplayed her talents and contributions. Clementine also details the heart-breaks in the lives of the Churchills—especially when it came to their children. The story of Clementine Churchill is one that should not be lost to history. Thanks to biographies like this, as well as movies like The Darkest Hour and even the television series, The Crown, Clementine Churchill is getting renewed and much-deserved attention.

Mrs. Winston Churchill - "she is so elusive that views differ on such basic questions as the color of her eyes (gray, blue or hazel-brown?) and hair (ash-blond, brown or red?)". She is often rather disparagingly described as the woman who stood beside Winston Churchill - kept the home fires burning and the drinks fresh, so to speak. After reading this book, I have a more ambivalent view of Clementine Churchill. Yes, she always stood by him. She endured financial hardships of his making - frequent moves because they could not afford the upkeep of the house they rented. Always meticulously turned out, she provided a good foil for him. Winston came first, even before the children - his needs, his desires, his career, his reputation always dictated what happened. Why do we not know more about her efforts during WWII on behalf of suffering Londoners or collection efforts for starving Russians? On the one hand, Clementine was very progressive and helped Winston understand (almost) non-Victorian women; then, she was rigid in her class consciousness; and she was unforgiving. This book looks at material from a variety of sources and incorporates remembrances by family members such as her daughter Mary Saomes or her daughter-in-law Pamela Harriman. It is a revealing book about a woman who has been in the shadow too long.

She put Winston before everyone, including children and her own health. This excellent book focuses on Clementine's family, origins, marriage, and her interactions with the political elite between the world wars. Highly recommended biography!

#43,736 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I agree with the premise of the book: we are merely collections of atoms subject to the laws of physics. Therefore, the laws of physics are what are ultimately responsible for our thoughts and actions. This has implications for the criminal justice system and how we ought to structure society in general. The problem with the book is that the author seems to think determinism is true. A quote from the book reads, "Today, the only philosophically respectable way to endorse free will is to be a compatibilist—because we know that determinism, in every sense relevant to human behavior, is true." However, quantum physics says that the outcomes of physical processes cannot be predicted with certainty because they are not determined with certainty. Despite this, the author goes on and on about determinism although it is inconsistent with quantum physics. To sum up, we are not ultimately responsible for our thoughts or actions -- physics is. But the author should have studied at least a little quantum physics before writing what ought to be a physics book.

I was initially skeptical to even start this book, thinking that free will is one of those philosophical questions “destined” to never be resolved. However, after reading this short book I am convinced that free will in a sense in which I thought I had it is just not there. And this was quite an eye opener. One popular review here mentions that the book is interesting in the beginning but then not so much - personally I found every page informative and very well written.Highly recommended.

This is not really a book--it takes about 20 minutes to read. Yet, Dr. Harris, who is a very good writer, makes some interesting points. Since functional magnetic resonance imaging shows that a person's decision to move is registered in the brain several hundred milliseconds before we may be consciously aware of it and our thoughts appear to us without our conscious control, these facts suggest to him that we have no free will. Then what is meditation about? The point of meditation is to watch our thoughts arise and not do anything with them (don't believe, don't disbelieve them, don't be carried away from observing them). It is obvious that this implies there is choice. If one is able to disassociate to some degree from our thinking, therefore not "biting" into our seemingly randomly generated thoughts, we are certainly free to ignore them or, even more interesting, we can discover that the world can be seen without the structure of presupposition. It may be true that if someone has no insight into the workings of their mind, he is pushed, pulled and apparently controlled by conditioned, yet random thinking, peculiar to his/her own unique situation in time and space. But that's like saying meat can only be eaten raw, which was true until we learned to control fire. We do have ways of freeing ourselves from "acting upon" our thinking and this ability will, in fact, generate other thought processes that go beyond our present understanding of mind, either as a "free agent" or as Dr.Harris suggests, a programmed machine.

I'm a huge Sam Harris fan - his "Waking Up" podcast is consistently in my weekly listens and the episode with Eric Weinstein remains one of my favorite pieces of audio. However, this book is a huge letdown. It is either poorly written, intentionally hyperbolic or both. It's like a lazy blog post written after a night of drinking.Sam has a deep background in science and neuroscience, so it was startling and disappointing to see him write a manifesto that begins with a thesis and then back-fills it with nothing but personal anecdotes and off-hand observations to support it. He seems to think of free will as something that can only exist in a vacuum - completely devoid of context, internal or external forces, influences or stimuli. He simultaneously embraces the tenants of determinism while dismissing it. He constantly asks the reader/listener "why did you make a decision in your life?" and then removes all agency from our choices by ignoring anything in our collective experience which could inform that choice.A great example of this comes when Sam reminisces about his past involvement in martial arts and his decision to quit. He deliberately asks "why did I do this?" Instead of reasoning through his mindset at the time, the increased value of other interests, the condition of his environment, his own emotional state, etc, he lazily concludes he doesn't know. The whole book is intellectually lazy and sets this discussion of free will back years. If you're a real Sam fan, do yourself a favor and skip this.

‘Free will’ requires there to be a central chooser, a ‘self’, and there isn’t one! A terrifying notion to many, because of long cultural belief that we exist as independent entities that can garner praise and blame, without which seemingly looms an abyss of anarchy, chaos, nonexistence. But the fact is that we always ARE here and now, no matter what we believe; and right/wrong and good/bad remain as qualities of behavior, the particulars varying from culture to culture. Nothing to fear besides a change of perspective, self-image, loss of false beliefs.Inseparable from the universe, conditioned from the “big bang” to conception to physical death, free will for us is but an illusory concept. Then what is it that makes choices? The entire universe! In fact ‘you’ and ‘I’ exist only as ever-changing thoughts and feelings, moving processes in space-time, present participles rather than nouns: doing, thinking, etc., each in a unique way. Our freedom consists in deserving of neither praise nor blame, since what we do is (unpredictably, to a lesser or greater extent) inevitable. We are all constant change as mortal object of consciousness, stillness as mysterious subject.
