Review

“Desdemaines-Hugon takes readers on a fascinating journey through the ice caves of the Dordogne. . . . Her vivid descriptions help readers visualize the Cro-Magnon man or woman painting the beautiful bison, horses, mammoths, and other symbols. [A] fine reading experience.”—Library Journal  (Library Journal 2010-06-01)“The next best thing to actually seeing the prehistoric cave art of southern France’s Dordogne region is reading about it, as lovingly and meticulously described by Christine Desdemaines-Hugon in Stepping-Stones. . . a rapturous guide through five major Ice Age sites, each open to the public, and each with its own magical beauty.”—Peter A. What numbskull decided to leave out the color plates for the e-book edition? A book on this topic demands profuse illustration. Was it the same numbskull who formatted only some of the links to work? This is careless and sloppy, and limits the usefulness and convenience of an e-book.It was probably the same fool who built the index with no page numbers or locations. Is this really a professional book publisher?Though this book is not only informative but also illuminating, the exclusion of relevant illustrations make it a ripoff. The author's writing style is often irritating, with too many distracting incomplete sentences and an overabundance of gushing exclamations.

I bought this book as a companion to a recent (September 2013) visit to the Dordogne region. I knew about "cave art" but I did not know much more than the very basics. After reading this book I knew a whole lot more. In addition to describing the major caves in Les Eysies/Vezere Valley and the prehistorical/cultural context for the cave art, this book helped me appreciate the complexity of expression and "humanity" of the art in a quite modern sense. On a practical level, the book helped me plan a very nice two-day itinerary in Les Eysies/Vezere Valley. A big plus, when we toured the Font-de-Gaume cave our guide spoke no English - and I speak nearly no French - but since I had just re-read that chapter I was actually able to follow the guide's descriptions well enough. For what it's worth, this book is one of the few English language books that is on sale in *all* of the museum shops in the region. And, for anyone thinking of visiting the region it is absolutely awesome to stand in places with 50,000 years or more of human history under foot.

This must be a very difficult subject to write a book about because after several tries I haven't found one yet that hasn't been, as another reviewer said, overwhelmingly "dry or New Age". Having said that I think this is the best yet for someone like me who doesn't have an academic background in the field. It is certainly well written and eminently readable for the layman as an overview of the subject, but In the end it is disappointing. The real question the reader wants answered is "why" and, apparently so far, that answer is simply unknown. But that doesn't stop other authors from profoundly speculating.Thankfully this book does not focus on that type of guessing game. Ms. Desdemaines-Hugon does a very good job of sticking to what it is and not why it is.The problem however, it seems to me, based on what is actually known this is a subject for a book of illustrations, not page after page after page of text. If you haven't seen at least a copy the painting a glowing description of the "Mona Lisa", no matter how accurate, is a rather useless and frustrating experience. I found myself simultaneously ( and for the most part unsuccessfully ) searching other sources for some visual confirmation of the authors rapturous opinions.Bottom line, good but not great.

The author does an excellent job of conveying a sense of several particular caves in France, their art and the fascination it can hold. All without creating fiction. With this as an introduction, one will have a real framework in which to incorporate more narrow and fact-list types of work on the subject.Even more significantly, Desdemaines-Hugon is insightful and profound without projecting personal or cultural interpretations on the imagery or it's location (inside caves). Throughout the book, while questions and reflections flow, interpretations are notably absent. She consistently demonstrates a method of experiencing the place and the art with unassuming openess. Then in the last 3 pages she makes a concise and well supported statement, concluding, "What moves us today, whether for aesthetic or mystical reasons also touched these Paleolithic artists...Stylistic conventions, techniques, cultural motivations may vary over time, but . . . Beauty is spiritual." Some may disagree with that statement on the surface, but keep in mind I jumped from the middle to the end of 3 important pages. I recommend reading this book just for the broader implications of that idea and its fleshed out argument, as well as to enable one to avoid approaching Paleolithic art without a conceptual box in hand, looking for pieces that fit.

I was heading back to the caves in the Dordogne for a second look and someone suggested this book to me. I ordered it, thinking in the back of my mind that it in spite of my best intentions it would likely remain unread in the bookshelf because most books about rock art are either excruciatingly dry or dippy New Age. This book is neither. I read it bit by bit over about a week. The author has such a deep understanding and length of exposure to these treasures that she was able to create a real page turner. Her explanation of the context in which these works of art were created, and of the evoultion of our species, is a very valuable source.I could not recommend this book more highly and have ordered copies to give friends and family members who may never be able to experience these wonders first hand. This book is the next best thing.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. The author, Christine Desdemaines-Hugon, writes in a fashion that is informative, but not above my head. She freely states this book is a "more like a story, than anything else" and that is what I was looking for, regarding ice age cave art.I am interested in an introduction, a basic understanding of the subject, and Ms. Desdemaines-Hugon provides that very well.I highly recommend the book.

This book is fascinating and worth reading. I have been writing using the Vimala letters now for over a year, and it has been a beneficial and enjoyable experience. Robin Tanguay is a trained teacher in this approach to forming letters and good friend of Vimala Rodgers. She has reformed her own life applying the writing discipline and the discipline of AA and in this book shows how the two can be powerfully connected to help someone on his or her journey in recovery from destructive behavior. Even if one does not have any serious addictions, this book can be most beneficial in everyday life as we all would like to be more positive and helpful to ourselves and others. I recommend that you buy Vimala Rodgers book and this book if you are at all interested in trying this unique approach to making your life better. It is serious but enjoyable at the same time.

Dear Reader, There is no denying the value of this book. If you want to make major changes in your ability to function as a responsible adult, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, this is the book to read and experience. The author, Robin Tanguay knows what she is talking about, because she lives it. She shows you how easy it is to do a writing practice that is truly divine. I took up this daily practice and cannot express enough the gratitude I feel each and every day for having done so. The formula in this book leads you into your very best self. May Divine Grace fill your life like this practice filled mine.

Like very much

Robin Tanguay presents a path that ANYONE can follow. The title aptly speaks to the wanting many people have for change, and provides a path with which one can engage their WILL in order to change. The complementary Vimala Alphabet Handwriting System and Twelve Steps are powerful tools that offer a path for making changes vs just thinking or talking about doing so. Thank you Robin, for sharing your gift of clear communication, and your zeal for helping people forge stronger connections within and with powerful forces! The Willingness to Change: Twelve Steps to Transformation Through Your Handwriting

We each resonate with our own path to transformation of which there are many. But here is a very creative program which you may not yet have encountered. The intriguing program is two-pronged. Both facets work together to remove impediments to the Highest Self.Based on the transformational AA 12 Step Program (which extends well beyond the AA community and addiction) in conjunction with supportive handwriting changes as per the Vimala Alphabet (which reaffirms our noblest and most outstanding qualities), the author presents a very workable, rhythmic and enjoyable way to release negative attitudes and habits to reinforce a positive lifestyle.Handwriting has long been known as a visual graph of our thought processes; as thoughts change, handwriting does likewise.Drawing on the concept that the reverse is also true, the program moves one-by-one through the 12 steps, supporting the intentions of each missive with one or more Vimala letters to underline the step's positive aspects.More than theory, the author has been guiding clients with this program to positive lifestyle shifts since 2003. Well written, easy to understand and execute, you are invited to "chose a step, pick up your pen, find some unlined paper, and begin" to prove the system to yourself.

Robin Tanguay shares her own personal journey as well as providing practical tools for the recovery process. While her book uses the Twelve-Step format originally devised by Alcoholics Anonymous, it goes further than issues of sobriety versus addiction; rather it serves as a practical guidebook for anyone seeking personal growth -- addict and non-addict alike. The book reveals the author's remarkable understanding and applied wisdom for self-discovery and gives the reader specific tools for recognizing and overcoming codependence, self-sabotage, and victim consciousness. Handwriting changes are woven into each of the steps as a proven supportive technology. Rather than a quick self-help evening read, the reader embarks on a transformational journey. Tanguay defines a path for personal growth in practical, doable forty-day periods. The way is clear, detailed, straightforward (though not necessarily easy), and effective. This is an important work for anyone on a spiritual path.

An unexpected, beautifully written entry into the self-help arena. Tanguay's passion for handwriting as a path to personal excellence shines through, extending the benefits of this intriguing book far beyond the AA community. Unique and compelling, Tanguay extends an invitation you won't find anywhere else. I loved the text in turquoise ink scattered throughout book!

Review

“In his new book, The Wild Garden: Expanded Edition, Darke teams up across the ages—time-machine style—with a kindred spirit: William Robinson. . . . Both men were ahead of their times.” —Garden Design   “This new edition is two books in one, and a handsome volume at that. Henry Mitchell said it all when he claimed gardeners owe all to William Robinson. We do, and this book is the perfect way to appreciate that statement.” —Gardens Illustrated   “This new, expanded edition. . . . is essential reading for today’s ecologically minded gardens.” —Landscape Architecture “I’m giving a big Thumbs Up to Rick Darke’s updating of William Robinson’s classic The Wild Garden.” —Garden Rant “If there was but one book on our garden library shelf, William Robinson’s The Wild Garden would be the single tome, at once revolutionary and oozing charm. . . . With photographer and writer Rick Darke’s added chapters and insight, we understand more than ever the wisdom and urgency of Robinson’s garden gospel.” —Chicago Tribune   “Rick Darke retains all the original’s beautiful engraved illustrations while augmenting them with his own rich color photographs.” —Martha’s Vineyard Times   “Rick Darke could well be Robinson’s reincarnation.” —Ottawa Citizen “Robinson’s seminal work set forth a vision of the naturalistic approach that informed gardening for generations. . . . With photographer and writer Darke’s added chapters and insight, we understand more than ever the wisdom and urgency of Robinson’s garden gospel.” —Tuscaloosa News “Will truly inspire you. Originally published in 1870, [it] remained in print for more than 50 years with a message that is just as revolutionary today.” —Wenatchee World

From the Back Cover

“Rick Darke captures in text and brilliant photography the essence of Robinson's philosophy, now practiced virtually worldwide.” —Peter Herbert, consultant and former proprietor of Gravetye Manor “Rick Darke has done a great service to all gardeners in showing how Robinson's nineteenth-century classic is alive and relevant to us and our time.” —Noël Kinsbury, garden designer, author, lecturer William Robinson’s revolutionary book, The Wild Garden, envisioned an authentically naturalistic approach to gardening that is more vital today than ever before. First published in 1870, The Wild Garden evolved through many editions and remained in print through the remainder of the author’s lifetime (1838–1935). In the book, Robinson issued a forceful challenge to the prevailing style of the day, which relied upon tender plants arranged in rigidly geometrical designs. In sharp contrast, Robinson advocated for the use of hardy, locally adapted native and exotic plants arranged according to local growing conditions. Robinson’s vision was inspired by his first-hand observations of natural habitats in Europe and North America, and he put his ideas into practice in his own garden at Gravetye Manor in West Sussex. The Wild Garden was ground-breaking and hugely influential in its day, and is stunningly relevant to twenty-first century gardeners and landscape stewards seeking to adopt sustainable design and management practices.   In addition to the complete original text and illustrations from the fifth edition of 1895, this expanded edition includes new chapters and 125 color photographs by award-winning photographer and landscape consultant Rick Darke. His new material places wild gardening in modern context, underscoring Robinson’s importance in the evolution of ecological design and illustrating an inspiring diversity of contemporary wild gardens.

Unfortunately this lovely book had an error, at least in my copy, where several pages were repeated about 1/3 of the way through the book. For an expensive hard copy, this is rare, and unfortunately I didn't discover it until 3 days after my return window was up. Too bad for me, but maybe Amazon can give a heads up to the publisher.

Really appreciate this expanded edition, with photographs and chapters by Rick Darke. William Robinson was a visionary, understanding that sustainable gardening was the way of the future, one hundred plus years ago. As others have pointed out, the book is not about wild flowers but a selection of beautiful - sometimes exotic - plants that do well in England's climate and grow "like wild", vigorous and hardy, with little care once planted. Perhaps the title of Robinson's book should have been The Hardy Garden! But the point is clear: use plants that are easy to grow in your climate.

It is amazing how much gardening has not changed since William Robinson wrote this book a century ago. His concepts of garden design and plant use are still the basis of what we do today. The older books have more knowledge in them than some of the newer books with pretty pictures since they explain the "Why" of what is being done.

Wonderful book on the natural garden by The late 19th century gardener, William Robinson, with updates & luxurious photos by Rick Darke an advocate for the use of native plants in American gardens. A gift for the gardener who wants a more sustainable & relaxed approach to the garden.

Although Mr. Robinson writes from the viewpoint of landed English gentry, his joy in the land and his careful stewardship of the acres and acres he owns make a good read. Considering that Victoria was still alive, Robinson's concepts and techniques are remarkably ahead of his times. And much of what he suggests is translatable to this century and our much smaller plots.

Great coffee table book besides being interesting to read.

This is a beautiful book for those who love gardens. It provides a lovely look into different types of gardens with a very personalized touch to its informative narration. I got one for my mother, who had been taking it out from the library repeatedly. Now she is thrilled to have her own book!

The Wild Garden by William Robinson was written and re written over a period of more than 50 year for the Victorian English gardeners as a rebellion from the changed out bedding practices of the time. Robinson used native plants and imported plants from similar climes to enhance his estate in western England. The expanded edition uses wonderful photographs to enhance the wood cut prints of the 1890's edition.
