This book presents simple concepts in an overly complicated and convoluted way that may leaver the reader wondering, “Exactly what are they saying here?” When all the sand is swept away, the pearl of wisdom that remains is this idea: if you behave like an insensitive jerk, you will view others as objects, not people, and blame them for the problems possibly caused by your behavior, and will not realize how your actions are contributing to the problem. The solution is to be a thoughtful, considerate person who values the thoughts, feelings and opinions of others and does not run roughshod over them. If you are not sure if you are a jerk, look at your relationships with others. If you have widespread conflict in different areas of your lives: work, family, and friends, then you are probably acting like a jerk. If you have scattered conflicts from time to time with a few individuals, then chances are those people are the problem. The book does have an interesting anecdote about a man who is woken by his crying baby, and then lies there hoping his wife will address the baby’s needs, and when she doesn’t, he starts blaming her for being lazy and inconsiderate.The audience for the book appears to be hard charging executives who run roughshod over their subordinates and families. While most of the book points out the problems of how being in the box, as the term is used in the book, it does not really offer any details on how to change behavior. Instead it points people toward the sequel entitled “The Anatomy of Peace.” The ideas in this book are covered in a clear and direct way in the book “The Servant: A Simple Story about the True Essence of Leadership” by James C. Hunter. Both books are written using a fictional business executive who is having difficulties in his work and personal life, and through training by an enlightened person, realizes his problems and reforms his ways. While story is a useful way of delivering these concepts, I would like to see real-world examples of actual people who have been transformed by these realizations.

Perhaps you like the fictional story self-help book, where the author makes up a person, a company, and situations, and then uses this fiction to deliver a message. Personally, I don't like this style. First, it's entirely made up, so there's no fact or experience to base any conclusions on, it's entirely a work of fiction. Second, it's painfully badly written, the examples are incredibly overdone, the people quite clueless. Third, it's done to hide the lack of information in the book. By turning it into a story, it helps hide how little information is actually there. The information in this book could be expressed in a single chapter, maybe even a single page.Large consulting companies write throw away books like this for their seminars and to gain credibility for their consulting practices. That's why there is no author on the book, just "Arbinger Institute". Don't be fooled by the sales numbers, they probably all come from seminars they put on, that include the book in the price.Save your time.

As an executive coach, I use books as neutral way to get a person to think things through more deeply. Self-deception is a tough subject. It is not the role of a coach to make such judgments, yet it may be appropriate to provide material to challenge a person.This book was recommended to me by a fellow who was seriously self-deceptive. He and I have since recommended it to many others.Unlike many unlikable books that dwell too much on story more than bullet points, I found myself engrossed in this story. Living it out with the author over several days, maybe weeks of reading, helped bring it to life.This is a pretty gentle way to bring up and work through a very hard subject. Read it for yourself first. Change yourself before trying to change somebody else.

Maybe…this might be my most important book recommendation for you this year.The title…timely. The contents…convicting.Last week, while reflecting on issues of leadership character and humility, I found not one, but two copies on my bookshelf of “Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box.” I had never read the book (to my chagrin).So my wife read it first this weekend—and her praise was effusive. Then I read it. (Am I the only leader that missed this gem?) I should have read it years ago (and my former staff and family would agree). If you haven’t read the book—or leveraged the insights for your organization or family—drop everything and read “Leadership and Self-Deception.” Here’s why:REASON #1: SELF-DECEPTION IS RAMPANT. You don’t need this book to recognize how other leaders are blind to their own self-deception—but it will give you handles (and a practical metaphor) for understanding the blindness.REASON #2: I AM BLIND TO MY OWN BLINDNESS. Whew. (Did I mention “convicting” and serious gut-checking?) While trying to figure out the sin and self-deception in other leaders, I wondered, how did the authors insert mirrors on every convicting page?In Scott Rodin’s book, “The Steward Leader,” he reminds us, “If I could put one Bible verse on the desk of every pastor and every Christian leader in the world, it would be this: ‘If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us’ (1 John 1:8).”REASON #3: THE “BOX” METAPHOR. Powerful. Trust me—read and study this book with your team (and family) and you’ll be using the “box” metaphor within an hour. A book so good that even though I had it as part of a collection of books previously released earlier in the year I just had to buy the stand alone copy as well to have a proper completed set when all is said and done. A.K. DuBoff is the Queen of Space Opera. She creates characters and worlds that make her stories a must read.In part 1 of Dark Stars: Crystalline Space we are introduced to a world where do overs are real. Make a major mistake...die in an accident....reset and start again, with your memories of the previous turn in tact. It's a great combination of sci-fi, fantasy and video games that works really well. The resets are possible due to the Crystalline Network that connects everything in the galaxy except there is a Darkness coming...consuming worlds and somehow the military is able to pull our heroes from the network and give them a chance to preserve the archive of the network and hopefully figure out what the Darkness is and how to stop it. Strangers, Elle, Torran and Kaiden begin their adventure and must learn to work together with new abilities, bodies(yes..bodies) and access to technology/magic they didn't know existed for real until now.As I read the story, Elle quickly became my favorite of the characters with Kaiden a very close second (mostly because of his carefree attitude and funny personality). Elle has a presence about her though that just draws you in. She approaches life with optimism even during the hardest of times. With her family in danger due to the darkness, she never hesitates to do what she must and as the story progresses she clearly becomes the leader of the group as everyone defers to her on what should be done. I really liked the character interactions. I also like that the book, being a Space Opera, is lighthearted, fun, exciting and not over the top with too much technical detail or anything like that.TLDR: I'm horrible at writing reviews....It's a great book...read it!!!!!

This book is by far the best that Amy has written! (Later Edit - well, now that A Light in the Darkness and Masters of Fate are out - hmm - it appears that this was the first of three of her best - they just keep getting better!) It’s engaging, inventive, funny, and absolutely grabs you and almost impossible to put down. A fantasy quest in a sci-fi setting … where the core-concepts that bridge magic vs science are plausibly explained.Amy has invented a new paradigm - the “reset” - which holds a lot of storytelling potential. And the science behind the magic is extraordinary!Most of the book follows tried and true “quest” story path but is not a ripoff of LOTR, Shannara etc - she’s carved out her own universe and interesting quest-paths… a path of growth for each character, a path to master their skills, a path to meld together as a team, and a path to save their worlds.The ensemble of main characters has great chemistry - the story is told from the POV of their leader. Kudos, in particular, for writing a fun story without dragging in a bunch of swearing or explicit sex or unnecessary gore.I highly recommend this first book in the Dark Stars universe, and can’t wait for the next!

I loved the Cadicle series by this author and it was quite natural to want to see what the new Dark Stars series would be like. Crystalline Space is quite the space adventure with an interesting basic premise. The universe is crystalline in nature, almost like a virtual reality where the universe is powered by crystals. This leads to matrixes of people and worlds that can be "reset". In other words, everything can be made over or improved on. Makes one think of the movie The Matrix. In line with.this theme the main characters name themselves the Dark Sentinels, consisting of a Hulk like character, a Dr. Strangelove character and a sassy character somehow reminiscent of Catwoman.And these characters have to save the universe by going on a treasure hunt for three "artifacts".Sounds trite? Well. You'll be mistaken in such a belief as this Crystalline Space turns out to be quite a compelling and light hearted action adventure that , despite the many fantasy elements, will thrill and enthrall you. I can hardly wait to read the next instalment in the series. Enjoy.

Be Sure To Read the "Introduction"-- this is the book you give to your daughter or a good friend to read. Eric Metaxas has chosen his subjects well and his research is impeccable. Whether you like every woman he wrote about, after reading this book you will at the very least respect their life journey and the way they devoted their life to living out their beliefs. It's caused me to evaluate whether I have the chutzpah to live my life with as much passion in my relationship with God and with the depth of commitment and love for Him the way they did. I bought "Seven Men" for my husband, maybe it will affect him the way this book did me. I'm not the same woman I was when I first picked up this book.

We first read Metaxas' 7 Men and the Secret of Their Greatness. When he published 7 Women, we were thrilled. I lead a Christian Book Club, a mixture of men and women, and we are presently reviewing this book. Seven different members will be reviewing each of the stories of the 7 Women. Metaxas is an outstanding biographer. I highly recommend anything he has written.Jean Haynes

Imagine diving into the lives of some of the most influential and successful women in history. Not the super wealthy or internet famous—instead, women whose stories and influence spans hundreds of years, multiple continents, and a wide variety of topics.Eric Metaxas doesn’t offer a book of dry historical narratives about these women. Instead, his writing style offers their lives as a story that draws the reader in and gives them an insight into who these women were beyond their accomplishments.The book in a couple sentences: 7 great women—Joan of Arc, Susanna Wesley, Hannah More, Saint Maria of Paris, Corrie ten Boom, Rosa Parks Mother Teresa. Each one could have a collection written about her but Metaxas does an amazing job of highlighting not only their accomplishments but the character of each woman. You learn her background and how she became great.What I liked most: Each story had the right mix of history, fact, and perspective to bring the stories to life. The writing and tone allow readers to imagine the stories and engage. Plus, the wide variety of women and the purposeful choice of women who excelled without comparison to men is encouraging.I might change: Although each woman is unique, a concluding chapter that highlights similarities between all of the women would have helped the reader make solid conclusions.A quote to remember: “When I consider the seven women I chose, I see that most of them were great for reasons that derive precisely from their being women, not in spite of it; and what made them great has nothing to do with their being measured against or competing with men. In other words, their accomplishments are not gender-neutral but are rooted in their singularity as women.”

After reading the Bonhoeffer biography and hearing Metaxas speak live, I have come to appreciate & admire his unique blend of humor, intellectual rigor, and faith. I expect to come away challenged by his works and inspired by his ability to engage the audience with powerful and relevant truths. I just finished Seven Women and left feeling disappointed. As other reviewers have noted, I left unsure what truths or message he wanted to convey. I left confused over some of his comments about gender and unsure what he sees as the secret of their greatness (or ours). Perhaps some of that stems from his vantage point as a male author writing on the secret of greatness in women. I'm willing to give him grace in that. I did find myself wishing he had labeled each sketch with a theme, of what he thought that woman portrayed and why it was important or how it might speak to women (and men) today.As for the profiled women, I learned some fascinating portraits of some fascinating women, several that were completely new to me. Metaxas introduces us to their story through brief biographical & historical sketches. He sheds light on their stories and the times in which they lived. In doing so, he implicitly debunks stereotypes of one formula for womanhood and shows women who shaped history and made significant contributions in a variety of contexts. While their stories are interesting and stand alone as mini-bios, I felt less engaged as a reader and left to wonder myself why their story is significant to him and how or why he thinks it might speak to us today. (And I think there are many ways these stories can & should speak to us.) I have come to appreciate his insights as an author and wished I left with more of them in regards to this book and these women. As a single woman, I strongly appreciate, though, the pictures of great women who are single & faithful, those who made contributions beyond motherhood & marriage as well as those who were faithful through hard marriages, heartbreak, and abandonment.It's not my favorite Metaxas book, but I'm still a Metaxas fan. I'll look forward to engaging the next read.(I did not receive the book free and am writing the review just to share my thoughts.)

Great book which consists of mini biographies of 7 remarkable women and how their faith led and sustained them. Makes you want to read more about each one! Some of the writing was not in the same style as the others and in the acknowledgements the author wrote that some was written by his assistant. So I guess this would be the cause. At any rate, if you want a book to introduce you to some great women this is for you!

I enjoyed reading these mini-biographies about women that I may have heard of but knew nothing about. I really like Eric Metaxas writing style; it is very easy to read. I plan on reading more of his work in the future.

LOVING this book, thus far. I wanted some great nonfiction for the new year and Susanna Wesley is one of my spiritual heroes ever since my son died. She is the reason I bought this book, but I'm enjoying getting to know the other women so far, too.

Eric Metaxes is providing for a whole new generation to experience heroes, not Marvel (although those are fun) but true persons of integrity, faith and purpose. Every young man and young woman should read his 7 Men and 7 Women. Well done!

About the Author

Aka Akasaka got his start as an assistant to Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou, the creators of Deadman Wonderland. This volume of Kaguya-sama introduces a new character, Miko Ino, who is challenging Miyuki for student council president. She's idealistic, humorless and is running on a platform of enforcing moral behavior in the school. We also learn that she idolizes Chika. I think Miko is going to be an interesting addition to the cast. Kaguya and Miyuki are placed in an awkward moment when gossip has students thinking Miyuki is about to confess his feelings to Kaguya and they want a ringside seat. Kaguya finds herself in an even more embarrassing moment when she hears you can tell a lot about a man by his underwear, so she has to contrive an excuse to see Miyuki's (and he gets a very wrong idea). Kaguya-sama continues to be one of the very best romantic comedies out there.

This series gets even better as it moves on. This latest volume was an extremely quick but enjoyable read.
