Somewhere, sometime, "somewhat" dedicated individuals must necessarily put out a wake-up call to the Arts in Indiana patrons at colleges, museums, and libraries on this wholly unusual and neglected chapter of American cultural history at the turn of the 20th Century with its demographic changes of nation building immigration, new industrialization, and new urbanism. Fittingly, the Noguchi Foundation has an extensive curriculum guide available. His centennial birth date is November 17, 2004.

Lee Strobel's "A Case for Christ" was highly instrumental in leading me to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior. Coming from a scientific background, I was also skeptical about this whole "religion thing". However, the methodical scientific approach and evidence he discovered in his search for the truth, convinced me it is far more logical to place my faith in Jesus than not. I can do nothing but highly recommend this book and the movie if you are searching for the truth about Jesus Christ.

Lee was an Atheist, and his wife, an Agnostic.What makes this book so interesting, even as a believer, is the fact that Lee, former legal editor for the Chicago Tribune, embarked on a 2 year investigation into the reality of Christ. Was Jesus who He said He was? Did He really exist in the flesh? Are the biblical accounts just made up? Were there eye witness testimonies to miracles that supposedly happened through Jesus? Can groups of people maintain eye witness accounts without those stories becoming totally altered after passing down through even the first 20 people let alone generations?The really great thing about Lee's "investigation" was that he set out to prove that his wife, who became a believer, and all the rest of us, were caught up in a huge scam. Experts in the fields where Lee's questions could be addressed were engaged in this quest. This book is not fiction!Also, the movie, if you see it, does a great job of summarizing the whole investigation, and you get to "meet" those who were called on to fully answer Lee's questions, and they are not actors.

It's hard to rate this book with only 5 stars. I was raised a Mormon. After leaving the cult due to the Mormon inconsistencies and contradictions I found myself in a state of limbo. I didn't know what to believe. I knew that a God existed but wasn't sure if it was the Christian God, the many many Hindu gods or maybe some deity that was unknown and impersonal.The Case for Christ was a critical look at Christianity from the perspective of an atheist. Lee Strobel left no stone unturned. He tackled the historicity of the person Jesus, the resurrection account, miricals and every objection to which I wanted answers.

Well written and logical. A must for anyone investigating the validity of the claims of the Gospel.

I am a christian. My parents were born again long before I was born. My father was immensely and I mean it, immensely transformed after receiving christ. We prayed three times a day, and I was a firm beleiver in Christ simply by reading the bible and listening to men of God. Mama always spoke vividly about the Kingdom yet to come. It is the happiest time of my parents lives, speaking about Christ. I therefore knew christ without reviewing the evidence. Reviewing the evidence in this book has given me a new drive and commitment to the cause and now I am altogether stronger and better grounded. I wish I had read this book years ago! I would definately have had better use of my time witnessing for christ.

Author Lee Strobel makes the statement quoted above at the end of this book. To him, the witness of the Spirit to us through an encounter with Christ is the ultimate confirmation of the truths proposed and taught by Christianity.Before this, he spends 14 chapters in the book looking at common objections some people present for why they do not believe that Jesus is truly God as Christians believe. Strobel--who was once himself a nonbeliever/atheist--refutes the objections and is convinced that the objections are baseless. His arguments convinced me, too, but not all of the chapters were as important to me as the others. We all come to acceptance or rejection of Jesus as God from different places, and unless we are set in our thinking against the truth of Christian revelation, it seems to me that at least some of Strobel's reasons should prove to be persuasive. I have known people, however, who are so set in their opposition to accepting the divinity of Christ that I doubt this book (or any others) will make a difference. (I had a friend in college who was so wounded by life while a child that he turned against God in anger and identified as an atheist. He refused to consider any arguments for Christ and the Church and had build up a wealth of reasons why he was correct.)This book should also be helpful to those who already believe in Christ because it presents many arguments and reservations by those opposed to belief in Christ. Knowing the arguments and sensible reasons against them can help Christians understand those opposing Christ and gives believers understanding of how to counter those arguments.I agree with Strobel about the importance of the Spirit revealing the truth to us. While I was somewhat catechized and taught about Christian truths as a child (as much as a post-Vatican II child could be!) and didn't have great objections to belief, my faith was not deep and wasn't really important to me. Confirmation of my belief came to me as I encountered Christ though Scripture, prayer, the Church and sacraments (especially the Eucharist), and the community of believers. My now long pilgrimage in seeking to know Christ and understand him has led to deeper faith and a more joyful experience of it. Over time, indifference and questions I once had melted away. This way the rival company does all the training. This, of course, leads to the problem of entry level workers trying to find years of experience.Though this is a solid work, I have read better works on the issue of higher education costs. The author skillfully expands on solid arguments for and against colleges. I definitely liked the book, it just doesn’t sit on the top of my list of recommended readings.

Anyone with children preparing for college or even in college would benefit from reading this book. Cappelli provides a clear assessment of the financial benefits and burdens of college. Students would do well to read the section on financial aid, which breaks down the different types of aid and lays out the financial and legal issues for student debtors. I found Cappelli's discussion of the STEM issue particularly interesting. Naively, I assumed that all students majoring in a STEM subject would be well-positioned for employment after college. Cappelli explains why this may not be the case. He also details the financial risk for students who need to spend a fifth year completing their college program. There is so much anxiety and hype wrapped up in finding the "right" college. This book is a calming read which should help parents and students to view the college application and financing process in a rational manner.

This book is a methodical analysis of how investing in a college education can be harmful or helpful. Cappelli's approach was a no-BS investigation of data with reasonable conclusions and recommendations. It was never a question of whether college would pay off for me. But he explains how to avoid causing harm to your education and work career. More importantly, he offers an idea of what will create the most value from education and how to turn that in to a job. He drives home what a new student should do while in and after school to ensure a college degree is a pathway to the life you want. On that note he also tells you what benefits to expect from various credentials.The book was sometimes very dry and I had to push through to finish. But I really value what I learned from it.Recommended for every college student or parent.

This is a really superb book that gives a basic structure that the new TV screenwriter can use to generate an good quality script. TV drama spec scripts have specific structure and format requirements that are not obvious to the new writer. Is this the ONLY way to write a salable drama? Of course not--and Dan Calvisi says that up front. But it is a terrific format that lets writers focus on telling their stories and generating acceptably formatted and structured scripts. Once you learn the trade, and know the rules, you'll be able to bend this structure if you want--as long as you're doing so in service to the story itself and not to break them just to break them. Highest recommendation.

As a novice in this genre, Calvisti's book was exactly what I had been looking for. My writing over the past few decades has been exclusively non-fiction, so the gnawing question for me in tackling a TV pilot project was: how do I structure the fictional tale that has been stewing in my imagination since the 1980's?I had not found a clear, usable answer until now. "Story Maps" solved my problem and iIt did so using as examples work with which I was already quite familiar, "Breaking Bad", "Mad Men", "TWD" etc. (The only two pilot examples I had to seek out for a first look were "Scandal" and "Mr Robot").Using his methods I was able to quickly structure the existing elements of my story into a framework I am not fleshing out with dialogue, etc. and I did so within just a few hours after first opening his book.I concur with many of the other points being made here by other 5-star reviewers, so I won't repeat those. "Story Maps" is a concise, inexpensive, highly effective solution to a significant challenge. Calvisi delivers exactly what he promises.

Finally a book that's not just padded with experiences in the trenches and all that irrelevant nonsense. Here you get what it says on the cover- a roadmap. And it works. I'm pitching tv at the moment and with no tv experience but tonnes of commercials, shorts and the like I just needed the recipe. Nothing more. So this feels like a Save the Cat recipe but love it or hate it, that recipe works. Same here. Out of the five or six books I bought to cram for this pitch, this one is the best.

As part of a recent research project on predicting Nielsen ratings, I had to read up on the art and craft of writing for television, particularly writingfor 1-hour dramatic series.The first titles that I read were those by William Rabkin.. After that, Kindle's recommendation algorithm kicked in and suggested one book after another--about a dozen in all. I came across "Story Maps" about midway through the lot.With no disrespect intended to any of the other authors, "Story Maps" is, by far, the best of the bunch. Before I explain why, let me give a few thoughts on this genre of books as a whole.First, it is my very distinct impression that these titles are intended for the aspiring and enthusiastic amateur writer--perhaps recent film school grads and/or writers in other genres, e.g. short stories, film, comedy, or journalism who are looking to break into TV writing. Put another way, such books are probably NOT written for people already working as writers for dramatic series--the assumption being that these folks already (should/do) know most of what is contained in such books.With that having been said, a somewhat a philosophical/pedagogical question arises: what kind of book on the subject of writing 1-hour TV dramas would best serve the aforementioned enthusiastic amateurs? Based on my many years of teaching graduate and undergraduate students--albeit in very different topics--one important criteria is brevity.I say this because of one well-known drawback of learning from experts: they have so much too say and often want to teach all that they know. Dan's book doesn't fall preyto this problem. I didn't do a page count but I'm pretty sure that it's the shortest of all books that I read on the topic. And to be clear: it's brief because it's focused on the essentials--the structure of the 1-hour pilot, just like it says in the subtitle.A second all-too-common problem of learning from experts is that they rely too much on war stories and colorful anecdotes. It's easy to understand why: war stories--especially those told by professional story tellers--are fun to listen to. And they are no doubt instructive. But they are no substitute for spelling out the conceptual vocabulary of the field and the analytical framework needed to apply the concepts to realistic, instructive examples. And it is here that Story Maps really, really shines. (Would it be too redundant if I said "really" one more time?)As the title suggests, the books give a a concise description of what the structure of a 1-hour Drama is. That discussion begins in earnest about 35-40% of the way through the book. Leading up to that, a number of important distinctions and definitions are provided--what the core formats are (comedy, dramedy, drama, etc.), the differentkinds of pilot episodes (e.g. premise vs. 3rd episode), and the meaning/ importance of setting, theme, crisis, teaser, arcs, A/B/C stories, etc.All of the definitions are supported by examples from highly popular and successful shows in very different genres, all created by writers at the top of their respective games. But the listing and defining of the key terms is only the set-up for the real important contribution of this book--the beat sheet that links the terms together and shows how they unfold in a sequence of 4-6 acts over 54-60 pages.In short, the beat sheet takes the reader step-by-step, from teaser/act one through the finale, showing how the many parts combine to make a "engine" that drives the story forward. Each of several shows is analyzed and used as an example in each section of the beat sheet. This is smart teaching. It allows one to see how the same elements combined in different stories but all to the same effect--a compelling pilot that launched a popular and highly acclaimed series.It's hard for me to overstate just how well-organized and useful this part of the book is. If you're like me, you'll need to read and study the beat sheet, and practice diligently at the examples. This book was detailed, concise, easily understandable, and what I expected. Having read and understood many books on writing feature films, I decided to also learn writing for TV. This book translated well. Calvisi maps out enough of the top shows on today so as to be sure that you've seen at least one of them, if not all. Most importantly, after having detailed what defined the parts of a story, Calvisi details what happens beat-for-beat, and with page numbers. If you're like me and study multiple books of the same, which makes for good research, this is a great addition to the pile.

For anyone that wants to get a clearer vision into writing their next drama, this book may just be what you need. I'm a novice but it has helped me have to foresight to put together a well balanced script for a pilot I always wanted to write. The examples and story maps given helped me be able to better analyze, which in turn made me enjoy more so, some of my favorite programs.

This book is a phenomenal resource to help the budding TV writer establish a framework and process for not only their current project but all future projects. In business terms, think of it as akin to a Due Diligence framework. It's a checklist of all the things you need to think about and do to maximize the potential commercialization of your story. It's that simple and that comprehensive. The magic of the book is that it weeds out all the unnecessary mumbo-jumbo in most how-to writing books and focuses squarely on "process". It's simply wonderful.

I have thumbed through this book, and it is one of the better gray scale books out there. I love gray scale - it is my favorite form of co!oring book.For those of you who are new to gray scale, I suggest that you start with colored pencils. There are loads of videos available on utube to get you started. Watch one or two, pick up your pencils, and watch the magic.Jade has once again brought a lovely book to fruition! I haven't had a book by her that was poorly done.

I am just starting to color but I like the texture of the paper it is printed on. It works great with my Color-It pencils and my Prismacolors. They are full pages so there is a lot to color. You could also color just the animal and leave the background in the grayscale. I think that would look cool.

The artwork / photography is amazing in this book...but being grayscale it is hard for colored pencils to show up...I love the results using the Derwent Inktense pencils in these grayscale coloring books...the problem is even using a barely damp brush the page will buckle slightly...NOTE: to Coloring Book artists please make your grayscale books with thicker paper; I would rather pay a few dollars more and be able to use my Inktense Pencils with the grayscale coloring books.

most people who left reviews on this book didnt even bother to try to color in it before they reviewed it. what in the world are you reviewing in a coloring book before you try to color in it? the pictures are nice, but im not sure if it is the closeness of lights and darks, or the paper itself, but it is actually really hard to color in. it burns through my faber castells like they are prismacolors. if you are a pretty good artist you will probably do well with it. i just felt like the variations in the grayscale could have been a little more defined. on a good note this book is EXTREMELY cheap considering the amount of pictures that are in it.

AWESOME GREYSCALE COLORING BOOK. PICTURES ARE PRINTED ON ONE SIDE OF PAGE AND THE PAPER IS GOOD AND HEAVY.THE PICTURES ARE ABSOLUTELY REALISTIC LOOKING AND ARE SO GORGEOUS WHEN COLORED.

A total waste of money. Many of the photos are very poorly composed and most are much too dark to color over or use as a reference for a seperate value drawing. Not recommended.

Very nice book - beautiful illustrations with greatly detailed images. This is a thick book with many pages of high quality paper. Got it for my junior high aged daughter who loves it. She is using colored pencils to color the pages.

Lovely idea, but was hoping there'd be instructions inside that would help figuring out how to do this. It's harder than I had hoped. Probably will never use it.
