Dr. Leary doesn't disappoint! I purchased the audio version of this book in preparation for a trip to Vegas. I'm a big fan of audiobooks while crammed into a bus with wings eating pretzels and drinking shot size Coke. It takes my mind off the always "larger than me guy" who inevitably sits next to me that has personal hygiene issues. I looked around and of course, I was surrounded by college-aged small framed women. You could have fit two or three of those girls on one of these tiny seats. And, I'm guessing they smelt a hell of a lot better than jumbo who was sweating like a whore in church that was next to me Dr. Leary kept me entertained throughout the flights coming and going to Vegas. I'm glad I got the audio version because Dr. Leary narrated it. It drives me crazy when you buy an audiobook written by a star and they don't narrate their own work. It was like he was there. Suffering just like me in not so friendly skies. He did a great job of narration that kept me engaged in the book. I enjoyed his jabs at both parties. Dr. Leary doesn't pull any punches, and that is refreshing to me in this age of "political correctness." He also entertains with stories of other musicians and Hollywood types. Funny stuff indeed! I also enjoyed learning about his parents. Both of my folks are Irish immigrants, so I can relate.Being a big city cop for the last 23 years, I truly appreciated his recognition of Firefighters, Police, and Military. I hope you weren't taking a knee when you did that. Thanks for the laughs Dr. Leary! You made my trip to and from Sin City much more bearable. The rubber things on my earphones fell off and I was unable to retrieve them on the trip back. I toughed it out without the rubber things, it was worth the pain. Oh, by the way, I was only down $50.00. for the trip. Not too bad for being there for four days. Thanks again for the fun, entertaining and laugh out loud moments. Keep writing Dr. Leary!

VERY funny and insightful and painfully true all at the same time. I wish I had bought it on Audible so I could hear Denis Leary narrate the words, which I bet would have made it even funnier--but reading the book had me laughing out loud anyway. I might just download his narrated version anyway just for the hell of it. I didn't read his first book--yet--but now I will because we all need to laugh at ourselves and the state of American politics; Leary spares no one--Democrats and Republicans get blasted equally in these very entertaining and profane riffs on everything from politics, to the nature of fame, to the importance of staying grounded in family, friends and reality, and more.

I’m a sceptic when celebrities write books, but I always appreciated Denis Learys humor. Needless to say this book delivered tears, laughs and insightful narratives that I would have missed. Make America great again in my mind takes ALL of us to achieve... we are all so damn different in opinions, judgements, factions of life, etc....but we all bleed red. So, maybe just maybe we can all just have a bit more humor with one another.

This book has made me laugh out loud several times. Lots of wonderful self deprecating humor. He convinced me that we don’t suck.

This book is hysterical. Denis writes what we need to say. The world has changed. Listen to Doc Leary. Get your head on straight!

Pure Denis Leary fashion. So sarcastically funny it kept the pages turning! Need this comic relief to deal with the insanity going on in our country right now.

I have not finished this book yet but I am laughing through every page! The humor and writing does not disappoint. I may not agree with all of what he writes but he is entitled to his opinion and presents it in a convincing and extremely humorous way! Got to laugh yourself through life these days and this book helps that along. I highly recommend it!

Dr Leary's insane ability to mix satire with a healthy dose of Truth bombs makes this book absolutely GENIUS! We as Americans have forgotten how to laugh at ourselves! This book will remind you that Humilty, Humbleness and HUMANITY are forget virtues, all while giving a quick kick to the Funny bone! Live, Laugh, and Love thy Neighbor no matter what there political standpoint is!! BRAVO on another fine piece of literature!

I wanted to find an accessible translation by a woman to Lysistrata, since I started using Women on the Edge: Four Plays by Euripedes in my theatre history classes. That book is excellent and the women who did the translating did an impressive job of translating without adapting or making the language too contemporary. I was hoping I would find one of the 4 women who translated and edited that book to have published some Aristophanes' translations. In the search I landed on this book, and my students and I really enjoyed this read. The gloss that Sarah Ruden has added to the translated text is excellent, and she explains why she chose to translate a certain phrase in the way that she did. It really opened my students' eyes to the responsibility of a translator, and how a personal agenda cam creep into the translation. As with Women on The Edge, he most valuable aspect of this book in my mind is the excellent commentaries she added on Athenian Democracy, Ancient Greek Warfare, Athenian Women, and Greek Comedy. There is about 10 pages on each of these subjects and, wow, they are so beneficial. I will use this as a required text from now on because it is not expensive and the material included in the commentaries is an invaluable supplement to any theatre history text. Both this book and Women on the Edge provide solid historical context in a way that I have yet to find in larger anthologies or cheaper single play editions. I should add that my students, who are are reading the Greeks at the start of a more extensive theatre hist and lit class, gave both the translation and the commentaries thumbs up! However, one thing to be aware of is that this translation doesn't try to tone down the sexuality in the script. It is very direct ( and again Ruden explains her choices). If you are uncomfortable with the explicit language the Athenians used, or you are looking for an aggressive feminist theory approach to the theatrical text, maybe you won't like this. I want my students to understand the historical context, the laugh lines, and the theatricality of the text. It fits my goals very well. And check out the 4 plays and commentary in Women on the Edge, if you are a Euripides fan!

The story and the writing and the presence of phrases we use today (I really hope they are not an inclusion of the translator) can give a tricky sensation that the story has been written at most one hundred of years ago and not the two and half millennia that it has (!). The story is about a way that the heroine, Lysistrata, has devised to end the war that men have waged, the funny thing is that her reason to ideate her plan is the, mostly erotic, longing she feels for not being able to be with his man, and this is the reason the women of Greece accept to back her plan.It is not a war of sexes as the motivation is not to prove which side is the strongest; is rather a way to reunite women and men separated in love by the long war. Also I notice some observations about the government in times of Aristophanes. The translation is what almost gave me reason to give three stars to the book, this because as I am not native English speaker the Scottish accent given to the Spartans seems to me out of place and tiring to decode. Other point that makes me dubious of the work of the translator is if he decided to give a contemporary accent to Spartans thus what guaranty one could have that he has not introduced modern phrases to replace old ones... Finally I believe that with works so ancient is better to use a modern English than one that looks artificially old and disguises the natural poetry with anachronistic clothes. But then again this is a personal observation that could be no usual with the uses in English language.

Let me start by saying that I am not a classics scholar. I have no knowledge of Greek, and the last time I studied Latin was as a high school sophomore thirty five years ago. I am, however, a student of rabbinic literature, and anxious to understand the Greco-Roman milieu from which Rabbinic Judaism emerged. I also am anxious to know how these plays were performed orally, in front of a live audience. To that end, I have always preferred colloquial translations to more formal ones. And this translation certainly fits the bill, providing lots of "colorful" language. While I suspect that purists will find this approach off-putting, I personally find it exhilarating. Remember that we are talking about a comedy show, performed in front of a largely illiterate audience, and perhaps accompanied by imbibing copious amounts of wine. Bawdy? Yes. Off color in places? Yes. But a rollicking good time - yes! No wonder that in Providence, not far from my son's school (URI), they did a series of performances of Lysistrata - which audiences loved. I hope they used this text, or one which is very similar.

I don't think that this play has stood the test of time. I love the story idea of women withholding sex to stop war and I would love to see a modern day version of it but it was hard to follow sometimes and surprisingly graphic. I wonder how it was received in its time.

I had to buy this for a college literature class. It was called survey of literary humor- and let me assure you this book was not funny. If you want a comical book read “The Confederacy of Dunces”. It’s so ridiculous it’s funny. It’s the only book that has actually made me ever laugh out loud.

Good translation. Perhaps the best part of it, is it's historical appendices. Probably comes as close to capturing what we know of Athenian "humor" as any translation I've read. There are some allusions that are just lost to history, but still the story and the sharp dialogue is great.

After reading five other translations, I chose Ruden's translation to direct at our local community theatre. Yes, it was profane and bawdy but it was the most "performable" of all the translations I read. The footnotes and essays helped actors (and the director) to "get it" and the colloquial language made it accessible to contemporary audience members and those who are just reading the script. The actors and audience loved it! My favorite version...fun and scholarly!

"Boy, Snow, Bird" was my book club's choice of the month. I'm not sure that I would have personally chosen this book to read but it's a great example of why I joined a book club in the first place. We are constantly exposed to books from different genres and themes and this month's theme was a fairy tale retold, and in this case, Snow White. There were larger issues, such as racism and how other's perception of you can shape your life and how you see yourself, displayed in this story. Constantly looking for the similarities to the Snow White fairy tale can become distracting which could, unfortunately, cause the reader to miss a lot of symbolism weaved throughout the storyline. The story dragged in the beginning and I wasn't quite sure what the point of the story was. At first, the only similarities I saw to Snow White were the references to the mirrors and one of the characters being named Snow. Otherwise, I just didn't see it, but I hung in there and the plot started to pick up after the 30% mark. Just as things really started coming to fruition the story ended very abruptly and without resolutions. This was unsettling to me and I find it very annoying to finish a book and feel that the story is unresolved. After my Book Club's dynamic discussion, I read a review article of "Boy, Snow, Bird", which also stated that there were no resolutions to the many issues presented in this book, and I felt vindicated that I wasn't alone in my assessment. It also got me thinking that maybe this was done on purpose because there are no real resolutions to these issues in real life, so why should we expect them to be resolved in a novel. I started to remember passages from the beginning of the book that didn't mean much at first but meant so much more now.Maybe this novel is just a vehicle to make us aware of these important issues, and designed to make us think.

Purchased this for a book club and was excited to see a new take on the snow white/evil step mother storyline. But this was just... Weird. The writing was at moments brilliant, and others utterly confusing. Never could get into the "rhythm" of reading it (and therefore get lost in the story) because you had to stop and reread certain sections over in order to understand exactly what this person was trying to say or what the narrator (if you can call her that) was talking about. And the ending, well... Random and half baked sum it up. Not that I was loving the book before the last 20 pages, but the ending killed any goodwill it had created up until that point. Would not recommend for a "fun" read. But it certainly was fun to discuss (and make fun of) during our book club!

When I see a movie or read a book, I'm always looking for something I've never read/seen before. As decades of reading pile up, I find so much I read and see so predictable. But this book, aaaah. I do not want to do what so many reviewers do and tell you what happens. But the themes: the power and pain of beauty, the decisions of motherhood, the meaning of family. And Oyeyemi's language, her play with words, her humor. I realize this is one of those books that folks either hate or love. If you're looking for a nice new twist on Snow White (like Wicked), forget about it. This is a book you've never read before.

Helen Oyeyemi was a new author to me, and I became aware of her book "Boy, Snow, Bird: A Novel" through an recommendation on Amazon. The narrative is in the first person, but each chapter has a different narrator, telling the story of one suffering family over two generations. How the women in this one family reach integration and peace of heart: this is at the heart of the novel. It is full of surprises, sometimes uncomfortable ones, from the start to the finish. In the end the reader needs to recognize that life must be embraced at deeper levels, as Boy, Snow and Bird do, in spite of all their difficulties.

Strong writing. I plan to reread this book. A couple of the characters were challenging to remember as they were spread over time. But that was just the writer's style. It was interesting that my assumptions about Boy's feelings and interaction with Snow was inaccurate. I misread the cues. Maybe that is what the writer intended. This is mostly a story about what happens when a child lives with abuse and rejection, how she makes adult choices and how those choices effect others. We're all familiar with examples the way abuse breeds abuse. But some survivors manage to subdue their anger and resentment just below the surface and leave those around them wondering what's at the root of that person's behavior. All of this goes on with a backdrop of issues around racial ambiguity. The main story could have progressed in much the same way even without the black family "passing" as white angle. And It felt as if nobody cared except the family members when the bloodlines where exposed for the town to see. All in all, the story was enjoyable. I would recommend it.

Couldn't understand why so many people gave it a bad review? It may have helped that I didn't think it was going to be anything like Snow White until I read the reviews. If I had started with that expectation, my review might be completely different. I really liked the characters and their development. I liked the twist in the middle. I am from an area where race relations have not always been smooth sailing and love across the colour bar was illegal. I found it intriguing and saddening but beautifully written. I really enjoyed it!

Engaging, but I found some sections confusing. The satisfaction I hoped for was not there upon finishing this book, as I had too many questions. Still, it held my attention, and I am considering rereading, to see if my confusion is answered.

Oyeyemi introduced a lot of complicated themes but didn't resolve them sufficiently. The ending was utterly bizarre and ruined all the hard work in character development in my eyes. There are some area of beautiful prose and the intimacies of the letter-writing between the sisters was spectacular.

Hannibal: A Novel, by Thomas Harris

Amazon.com Review

Horror lit's head chef Harris serves up another course in his Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter trilogy, and it's a pièce de résistance for those with strong stomachs. In the first book, Red Dragon (filmed as Manhunter), Hannibal diabolically helps the FBI track a fascinating serial killer. (Takes one to know one.) In The Silence of the Lambs, he advises fledgling FBI manhunter Clarice Starling, then makes a bloody, brilliant escape. Years later, posing as scholarly Dr. Fell, curator of a grand family's palazzo, Hannibal lives the good life in Florence, playing lovely tunes by serial killer/composer Henry VIII and killing hardly anyone himself. Clarice is unluckier: in the novel's action-film-like opening scene, she survives an FBI shootout gone wrong, and her nemesis, Paul Krendler, makes her the fall guy. Clarice is suspended, so, unfortunately, the first cop who stumbles on Hannibal is an Italian named Pazzi, who takes after his ancestors, greedy betrayers depicted in Dante's Inferno. Pazzi is on the take from a character as scary as Hannibal: Mason Verger. When Verger was a young man busted for raping children, his vast wealth saved him from jail. All he needed was psychotherapy--with Dr. Lecter. Thanks to the treatment, Verger is now on a respirator, paralyzed except for one crablike hand, watching his enormous, brutal moray eel swim figure eights and devour fish. His obsession is to feed Lecter to some other brutal pets. What happens when the Italian cop gets alone with Hannibal? How does Clarice's reunion with Lecter go from macabre to worse? Suffice it to say that the plot is Harris's weirdest, but it still has his signature mastery of realistic detail. There are flaws: Hannibal's madness gets a motive, which is creepy but lessens his mystery. If you want an exact duplicate of The Silence of the Lambs's Clarice/Hannibal duel, you'll miss what's cool about this book--that Hannibal is actually upstaged at points by other monsters. And if you think it's all unprecedentedly horrible, you're right. But note that the horrors are described with exquisite taste. Harris's secret recipe for success is restraint. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly

This narrative roils along a herky-jerky vector but remains always mesmerizing, as Harris's prose and insights, particularly his reveries about Hannibal, boast power and an overripe beauty. If at times the suspense slackens and the story slips into silliness, it becomes clear that this is a post-suspense novel, as much sardonic philosophical jest as grand-guignol thriller. Hannibal, we learnA"we" because Harris seduces reader complicity with third-person-plural narrationAis not as we presumed. The monster's aim is not chaos, but order. Through his devotion to manners and the connoisseur's life, in fact to form itself, he hopesAconsciouslyAto reverse entropy and thus the flow of time, to allow a dead sister to live again. He is not Dionysius but Apollo, and it is the barbarians who oppose him who are to be despised. Hannibal may be mad, but in this brilliant, bizarre, absurd novelAas in the public eyeAhe is also hero; and so, at novel's end, in blackest humor, Harris bestows upon him a hero's rewards, outrageously, mockingly. Agent, Morton Janklow. 1.3 million first printing; film rights to Dino De Laurentis. (June) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I was very hesitant to buy this book after seeing how evenly divided people were between loving and hating it. But then I realized that some of the best books drive fans to polarize this way, so I gave it a chance. To me, this book did reach a feverish nightmare quality that felt heightened compared to its predecessors. However, for Harris to pull off the ending, that height was necessary. Yes, it was shocking, but also utterly satisfying, and it couldn't have been accomplished any other way.I didn't entirely enjoy the middle section in Italy, but perhaps it only made me that much more glad to return to Starling and her action-packed chapters. If you're someone who gets particularly thrilled by a blazing showdown at the climax of a book, I'd recommend this book.If you're more interested in Harris' craft as a murder mystery writer, this book may have veered too far into ethereal horror territory for you.But either way, I think it's worth giving it a try.

I give the book four stars. To explain: the story seemed choppy to me. Perhaps I'm a fan of architecture in writing; avid description and character development. The psychology Harris tackles in these novels is what makes them a pleasant read, in my experience. I enjoy the descriptions of characters, their thought processes. Harris' brief allowance into the mind of Lecter, specifically, and other characters was rewarding. Note I said brief. Something seemed rushed with this novel.I wasn't upset with the ending, as so many fans seem to be. I get the strong female lead, Clarice Starling, and the reasons why, perhaps, fans wanted her character to remain ABOVE the influence of Lecter, to forever stand for some sort of invisible integrity placed upon what a "strong" female should be. Fans seemed disappointed because Clarice became human, through her untimely empathy and understanding of Lecter as, not a monster, but as another human being. The monster became human and for a moment we understood him, but we don't like to acknowledge we can understand monstrous behavior. The lamb, our strong female lead, then became lesser, almost monstrous herself, because she came to this understanding, and eventually offered herself as sort of a sacrifice to not only curb the monsters appetite, but in her own way, heal her own wounds.I found this novel to be a delightful read, along with the others. I really enjoy seeing how the writing and characters were woven together to create the "Hannibal" television series. That series was a fantastic, and visually stunning adaptation of Harris' work. To which I highly recommend! If your mind is open, and you simply enjoy reading, these novels are truly a treat.

While not as satisfying as Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, or (to a lesser extent) Hannibal, Thomas Harris manages to cook up a decadent appetizer to an already loaded three-course meal. It's hard not to see Hannibal Rising as a last-ditch effort to revive an ailing franchise by further developing one of the most complex characters of modern fiction. By offering a traumatic origin story as explanation for how a human being could become Dr. Lecter, Harris walks a dangerous tightrope in making his magnificent creation a less-fascinating avatar of evil. What this novel gives readers is a sumptuous look at Hannibal's youth, the plot of which is not much more than a thrilling story of grisly vengeance. A young Lithuanian aristocrat loses his parents and darling sister, Mischa, in the final desperate days of World War II. Hannibal is forced to watch as little Mischa is devoured by callous Nazi-sympathizing ruffians whom Hannibal later tracks down and gruesomely dispatches in the natural course of the novel. By the end of Hannibal Rising, the reader is left with a better understanding of the epicurean psychiatrist, even if the book doesn't exactly conclude with the satisfaction one would wish from an examination of Lecter's tenebrous beginnings. The action is swift and often fleeting, and the chapters brief (often only four pages), and the sentences are, for the most part, simplistic and lacking the eloquence found in Harris's preceding works. The dialogue is occasionally stilted and the character of Lady Murasaki, who sensually introduces the impressionable teenage Hannibal to a rarified world of Japanese art and poetry, exists only to be beautiful.Thankfully, Hannibal Lecter remains a preeminent literary icon, a dominant fictional boogeyman, and that's primarily due to Anthony Hopkins's unforgettable screen incarnation. Hannibal Rising reads like the novelization of a screenplay; not surprisingly Thomas Harris wrote the screenplay in the course of writing this novel. That isn't to say the book is a complete loss, for even after so many years since writing Red Dragon and Silence, Harris still possesses a keen aptitude for depicting the animal nature that lurks beneath mankind's veneer of civilization.

LOVE this book. Ive read it no less than ten times and this digital version is because the pages started to come off the paperback. The writing is spell-binding and the plot-line takes the reader on a whirlwind. I also LOVE that Lecter and Starling get together at the end. I know so many think it was crazy but it makes perfect sense to me. The Lecter back story is also enthralling and humanizes the character in a way that the entire SUCKY rendering of Hannibal Rising could not deliver. Id give this ten stars if permitted. LOVE THIS BOOK!!

Bill Gates (People in the News), by Adam Woog

From School Library Journal

Gr 7-9-Brilliant, intense, competitive, precocious, workaholic, driven, arrogant, obnoxious, eccentric, and charismatic are just a few of the adjectives used by Woog to describe the cofounder and CEO of Microsoft. Gates is the single most important person in the computer industry, and this title is as much a history of it as it is the story of Bill Gates. Although not an extensive biography, it hits the high points and portrays Gates's family, his successes, and his shortcomings. This book will suit assignment needs. It is better organized than Joan D. Dickinson's Bill Gates (Enslow, 1997) and has a better narrative flow. It is also more detailed and better balanced than that book. Woog's text is organized chronologically, easy-to-read, well written, and has good-quality black-and-white photographs.-Debbie Feulner, Northwest Middle School, Greensboro, NCCopyright 1999 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
