This is a really, really great book on navigating relationships and is great for both couples and singles. Based on the title you may think it is all about sex. However, to me, it is all about maintaining "who you are" and a healthy amount of independence or distance within the relationship so that the spark and passion stays strong between you. A spark doesn't happen without a bit of distance that it can arc across. This is true for passion and interest in relationships too.The book is written by a European who has been living in the U.S. and working as a therapist here for years. Through her background she has identified key issues in the way we handle relationships in the U.S. that are actually killing the passion. It does also discuss the differences between one partner and another in relation to passion, sexual interest, and general interest and gives suggestions on how to find a workable plan if those differences aren't changeable. The author discusses how our U.S. culture encourages complete enmeshment with our partners - so there are no secrets, no boundaries, nothing personal or private away from your partner. The problem with this is that you need to keep your individuality intact in order for a relationship to keep it's spark. It is our differences, the mystery of the "other" that creates passion. Without this you'll be hard pressed to have passion in your relationship. If you do everything with your partner, what new do you have to discuss and share? If you are in the bathroom while your partner does their most unpleasant business, how do you then turn around and see them in a passionate way? (my example, not the author's) This enmeshment is not common abroad. It is better understood overseas that you need to maintain independence and a level of mystery in order to keep passion burning. Significantly more marriages fail in the U.S. than abroad and perhaps this is why.By keeping your independence and NOT being an open book who does nothing without your partner you maintain the mystery and interest needed for passion. A passionate marriage is a happy and fulfilling marriage. Don't give up your favorite things or your activities with friends. Make time to go out with your best friends without your partner. Did you have a favorite activity pre-partnership that you never do anymore? Go do it - alone or with friends. Don't make every activity be with your partner - it's just too much. Then, when you come together you have different things to share, unique experiences and that difference, the mystery is intact. The author explains this whole concept so much better than I do - you really must read this book. I'd say it is my favorite book on relationships - and I read tons of books on that kind of thing(I'm in a doctorate of psychology program). There are, of course, individual differences in passion levels, sexual interest levels, and personal activity levels as well. These differences, and how to find a workable plan to satisfy those differences, are also discussed in the book. Essentially it tells you how to optimize the passion and interest, and then work from there to find a place that meets both partner's intimacy level needs.Summary: The U.S. has a different perspective on how relationships ought to be compared to abroad. The U.S. also has a significantly higher rate of divorce and relationship unhappiness. The premise of this book is that we become too enmeshed with our partner and lose our individuality. This kills passion, which needs difference and mystery to exist. This is understood abroad and relationships are handled differently there. The book demonstrates this theory through easy to read client examples and offers suggestions on how to return independence and passion to a relationship.

Got to this book late and am I glad for it. When it came out I was newly remarried and didn't need and wouldn't have heard the message. But seven years into a mid-life marriage I needed tips on answering Ester Perel's Big Question (from her excellent TED Talk): Can you want what you already have? Her answer seemed to be as I read: Sure you can. But it's work. And you better understand what's going on first.Add to this that my whole arousal system of mind, body, soul and sex is older, as I'm in my mid 60s. Love what she said when asked how many times she'd been married: "Four. To the same man." This woman and mom and wife and therapist and speaker of 6 languages not only reinvented herself to stay hot for her man but to stay interesting for her two teen children living with mom/dad as a foursome. Yes, sex as a family value. From Belgium and Israel, her husband and two kids live or lived together when she wrote this from their flat in NYC. It's one thing to write how to stay hot for each other while married; it's another to pull it off and then even be able to communicate the complex system that makes it possible.I gave one to a peer guy friend and one to my son. It's that good and helpful. They say when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Don't read this book too soon. Or too late either. But buy three copies and get ready. I say.

A friend asked me why he found sex with his wife "routine". He said he loved his wife and having sex with her still felt good, but he didn't feel "turned on". Instead, he found himself fantasizing about sex with other women. This book answers that question completely and helps one explore the contradictions and congruity of love and sexuality.

Fascinating and enlightening. This is one of those books that make you better, educated, happier, confident and much more if you read this with a very open mind. Perel offers great insight into human desire -- for love, sex, connection, space -- and how we tend to thwart the very intimacy we crave by applying judgement to our desires. I haven't read a better reason to be hopeful that long term relationships can maintain, even increase, passion and desire than this.

Read it. If you can't read it, read the last chapter or two. However, I believe everyone who cares about their relationship or their own health will find themselves in a few of the many examples. The overall message of the duality or tension of the long term relationship and the distance needed for eroticism seems so obvious after having read this. There are many brilliant observations in this book, but I would also recommend the many lectures that the author has given which appear on YouTube, including her TED talks. I listened to a few before reading the book and a few after reading the book. It's funny how they made so much more sense after reading the book.

If a book could save your marriage, this would be it! It has excellent advice about how to think about your intimate partnerships that will actually lead to real changes in the relationships. My sisters and I have all read this book as part of our family book club and can report much better marriages because of Esther Perel's advice. Nothing is a quick fix, but one step in a new direction can take you to new places. I recommend this book to everyone who wants a better intimate relationship--especially if you are willing to do the hard work of looking at your own actions and making small changes to be a better partner.

I think there is tremendous value in Perelman's insight that intimacy--marked by safety, closeness, and familiarity--and desire--marked by space, mystery, and risk-taking--are two distinct things. They not necessarily be opposed for many of us (thank God), but they are not the same, and need to be cultivated differently if we want to have a long term relationship marked by both loving security and erotic passion.

A fun read for fans of historical fiction. Edward Rickford’s novel recounts Cortez’s bloody conquest of Mexico through the eyes of the officers and soldiers of his army, as well as through those of the Aztec emperor and the woman Malintze, who rises from the obscurity of slavery to become Cortez’s translator and confidant.Rickford keeps the action moving around throughout the novel. Between the battles there are forced marches, scheming, and duplicity. Rickford has mastered the details of Pre-Columbian Mexican culture but doesn’t serve them up cold. The Aztec culture, in all its grisly splendor is on display here, with real people as characters and not cardboard cut-outs.The character of Malitntze is a great one: we experience the Mexica world through her eyes, and the image isn’t pretty. The reason for so many Mexica tribes rebelling against their Aztec overlords and siding with the Spanish becomes clear, however disastrous that strategy turned out to be in the long run.Hernan Cortez himself comes across as coldly amoral and driven by a relentless urge to conquer—Moors. Aztecs, anything— as long as it propels his fortunes. But there are many human-scale characters around him, each with their own lively tale to tell.

The Serpent and the Eagle is book one of Tenochtitlan Trilogy. This historical fiction is set in 1519 where Motecuhzoma leads the Mexica Confederacy. Mesoamerica has been happy for years and the nation prosperous, however, just like every other story, peace is not to stay as Hernando appears and has other plans for the land. The story is told through many perspectives covering many aspects of his historical Spanish tale. This enabled the storytelling to be multi-dimensional and created the necessary dynamics it needed to impact the reader. I believe that is what made this book different. The pace of the story reflected the complex content, and the power struggle between the characters was evident throughout the thrilling adventure. The story was beautifully written, and I admired the ability of the author in portraying the notion of reliving a story so delicately put together for a reader who would have absolutely no idea about its origin. The literature was of perfection. From description, history reciting, skill in the retelling, to the creativity of work, all deserved applause. The Spanish Cortes’s character, in particular, his dialogue, intentions, plans, were what set the story in somewhat a dynamic sense of a tale.I recommend this book to historical Spanish readers and alike.

Edward Rickford has done an excellent job bringing to life a story that I, for one, knew very little about. Told through a diverse cast of characters, The Serpent and the Eagle is about two very different civilizations that battle for gold and power, in a time when human sacrifices abound in an "undiscovered" Mesoamerican jungle, and the Spanish Empire is seeking to control new lands.Expertly researched and told in vivid detail, this work of historical fiction weaves together unique narratives and fascinating perspectives. Action, tension, drama, conflict; that's what you'll get with Rickford's debut novel, in addition to rich scene setting and storytelling.Anyone looking to branch out in the genre, or learn more about a little-dramatized period of history, should read this book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This story weaves a rich tapestry of Spanish conquistadors and native Mexica—commonly known as the Aztecs—as well as the neighboring native tribes, that transports readers to the lush jungles and grand cities of pre-Hispanic Mexico. The writing is clear and easy to read, with just enough Spanish and Nahuatl to add deep flavors without slowing the pace. The characters are vivid—both the Spaniards and the natives—and are well-researched, as they are mostly based on historical figures. The drama is ever-present, both in action and dialog. As this is a first novel, I expect this author to go on to write more excellent stories. I will be looking for more of his work in the future.

Author Edward Rickford sets in motion a thrilling adventure story when the indomitable Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés, makes landfall in the New World and begins his quest to locate and plunder the Aztec empire. The story unfolds aboard Cortés' ship, The Santa Maria de la Concepción where we meet the expedition's translator, Father Aguilar, in conversation with Cortés. Their dialogue spins a complicated web of intrigue between Cortés and Father Aguilar that sets the tone for the rest of the story.Rickford then takes us to Motecuhzoma's court to meet one of his trusted generals, Tezoc, 'The Cutter Of Men.' Using these four characters as the cornerstones of the story's narrative, Rickford weaves in a panoply of action and adventure, taking us across richly described jungles and tense encounters with native tribes as Cortés strives to take Motecuhzoma's gold and return home to Spain a hero.Cortés' unflagging pursuit is constantly tested as the expedition slogs its way through a beautiful but deadly landscape. I especially enjoyed Cortés' leadership skills; manipulating traitors among his men and negotiating with native adversaries even when his confidence in himself and in those he trusts is put to the test.As in all good stories, the end isn't what you'd expect. Rickford keeps us on the edge of our seat as Cortés puts together an ambitious plan that leaves his men no way out in order to sustain his expedition for the final assault on Motecuhzoma's capital, Tenochtitlan. The Serpent And The Eagle is expertly written and painstakingly researched. Author Rickford has captured a fascinating historical moment and turned it into an absorbing story that makes the history come alive.

This book is a good reference to the art of tying knots. I have been working on knots the past few weeks. I am and have been curious about the origin of these useful tools and techniques for a while. These works of art are a joy to tye and frustrating at the same time, as are the hobbies of most people. I will be purchasing a few more books to further my knowledge of this art. Thanks to the Author of this fine book.

Geoffrey's normal instructional style is not lost in this handy little book, which can either help or hinder, depending on your eyesight and your need for every step of the process. That's the good news, because he is a very readable writer. The bad news is that the experiment with motion did not really work. However, if you can focus in on the pale photos of the knot being tied, it really does help to find your way through a more complex knot. When I bought the book I thought that perhaps it would be like one of those cartoon flick-through books that give you a seemingly moving picture. That is definitely not the case with this book. What you do get is a blow-by-blow arrangement of photos across the page that can help to guide you through the tying of some complex knots. When it comes to a more simple knot though, the flow motion photos are a distraction. So who's to say what is a simple knot and what is a complex knot? That depends on the reader of course and, because not every reader is at the same level, the book works on those knots. If you find instructions insufficient when made with just a few photos, then this could be the book for you. If not, then this is just a curiosity and you will likely learn nothing new or interesting that has not previously been published.

Great book

Just as there is no perfect knot, there is no perfect knot book. All have deficiencies of one sort or another. One common deficiency seems to be misleading or just plain wrong directions for tying a knot. Another deficiency is a failure to tell the reader when to use a particular, or more important, when not to use it. All the books suffer these deficiencies to one degree or another.Another deficiency is too many knots! But how could this be a deficiency, one might ask. Isn't more better? The answer is that the beginner needs to know the most useful knots that have the widest application. If the book contains knots that don't have wide application but doesn't tell the reader which ones are widely used and which ones aren't, how is the reader to know which ones to learn? Therefore, for a beginner, careful selection by the author is essential.Budworth, The Complete Book of KnotsOf all the books, this is my pick as the best for a beginner. What I like about this book is that it contains large, clear line drawings, and for the most part, the layout is pleasing to the eye. Drawings are superior, in my opinion, to photographs. One drawback of drawings is that the cordage you're trying to knot never lies as smoothly and gracefully as the one in the drawings. (This tends to be true of photographs, too, however.) But if you view the drawings more as a blueprint, then you get a conceptual understanding of how the knot is to be tied, and drawings allow a clearer conceptual understanding than photographs in most cases.Another plus to this book is that most of the knots Budworth picked for inclusion are useful and often "best of breed" knots. On pages 6 and 7, there is a "directory of knots" that shows the best or most popular use of each knot. In addition, for each knot, there is a summary called "applications," and occasionally a warning when not to use a knot.A minus is that some of the drawings are wrong or misleading. For example, in the drawing for the double bowline (figure 8 on page 37), the arrow to show how the working end is rove (threaded) through the loops would have the working end going from the top of the loops to the bottom when it should be the reverse. After some frustration and referring to other sources, I was able to tie the knot. (Google is your friend.)A bigger minus is the terseness of the descriptions. In a number of instances, the author assumes you should be able to figure out the process from fewer drawings than I think necessary. I would like it if each and every step in tying the knots were shown. With some effort, I was able to figure out each knot that I tried to tie even though some drawings included several steps in one drawing. But why make the reader work? A book for beginners should make it easy. When I was starting with this book, I thought that it would be helpful if the author included pictures of the finished knot. After about a week, I realized that he did! But they are murky pictures that are either in a small space at the top of the page, above the name of the knot, or serve as a background for the entire page. There is no excuse for such bad pictures, which mar an otherwise excellent layout. Instead of putting some trivia about the history of the knot in a circle on each page, a clear monochromatic photo in the circle would serve the reader better. The book does not include decorative knots (Budworth having written a separate book on decorative knots).Because of the terseness of the descriptions, the lack of clear photographs of the finished knots, and the occasional errors, I downgraded this book from five stars to four.Pawson, Handbook of Knots (expanded edition)This book contains very clear color photographs, and the layout is quite pleasing to the eye. The problem with photographs is that it can be hard sometimes to discern when one cord is on top of another or below, and sometimes the hand can be hiding some important information. Compounding this is the fact that the book is small in format, and when you have four or five photographs on one page, each photograph ends up being small (say, 1.5" by 2.5"), too small sometimes.Although the book is soft-cover, the binding is stitched, and the book can be opened flat without breaking the binding. I found that it would stay open without much difficulty.Pawson, like Budworth, is a founding member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. But his choice of knots puzzles me. For example, he has a number of stopper knots but does not include Ashley's stopper knot, which many consider the most important stopper knot. He also does not include any grip-and-hold knot (such as the midshipman's hitch, taut-line hitch, or the Tarbuck knot). This is peculiar in that a grip-and-hold knot can be quite useful. I almost had the feeling that Pawson had decided that he would avoid (when he could) duplicating what Budworth had done. Quite gentlemanly, but not what I want in a book for beginners. On the plus side, Pawson includes a number of lashings, plaits and sennits, and splices, which Budworth does not.For what it's worth, I was unable to tie the Turquoise Turtle knot following Pawson's description until I watched a video on the internet.Based on the fact that this book uses photographs instead of drawings (particularly in a small format book), the sometimes odd choice of knots, and lack of warnings about certain knot uses, I downgraded this book from five stars to three. The Morrow Guide to KnotsThis book contains very clear color photographs, and the pictures are larger than in the Pawson book which is helpful. But layout is off-putting. There are typically several pictures on a page, but the picture on the top of the page is not the starting picture; it's the one on the bottom of the page to the left.Like the Pawson book, the book is soft-cover, the binding is stitched, and the book can be opened flat without breaking the binding. I found that it would stay open without much difficulty.I found the choice of knots to be satisfactory in that most of the basic knots are covered. A plus is that several ways of tying a knot is shown for several of the knots. That is always helpful. Another plus is that it covers decorative knots, such as plaits and sennits. This book's depiction of the climber's method of tying the bowline knot took me an hour to figure out because two steps were (inexcusably) combined into one picture without an explanation.A minus is that the book is outdated. This comment would have come as a surprise to me before I started studying knots inasmuch as many knots are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. But a number of improvements in knots have been made in the last twenty years, and these improved knots can't be found in a book published in 1981. Moreover, for the Tarbuck knot, the book states that the knot is used by climbers, but climbers have avoided this knot for decades because it tends to damage the kernmantel type of rope used in climbing.Another minus is the paucity of information about the use and misuse of knots.Based on the fact that this book uses photographs instead of drawings (particularly in a small format book), the odd layout, the lack of warnings about knot uses, and the dated nature of the information, I downgraded this book from five stars to three.Budworth, The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots & RopeworkThis book contains very clear color photographs, and the layout is quite pleasing to the eye.Of all the books that use photographs to depict the tying of knots, this is my pick as the best. Although the pictures are small, it's much more step-by-step than the others. In particular, it doesn't suffer from the terseness of Budworth's The Complete Book of Knots, and it shows a large picture of the finished knot. (It also correctly depicts the double bowline.)An important plus of this book, given its claim to encyclopedic coverage, is the inclusion of decorative knots. There are far more knots in this book than any beginner would need, and there is a paucity of information about the use and misuse of knots. My copy has an update date of 2002, making it the most recent edition of all my knot books. This book coupled with Budworth's The Complete Book of Knots would make a complete library for any beginner. But this book is too much, in my opinion, for the ordinary reader who just wants to learn a few useful knots. The fact that this book uses photographs would normally make me downgrade it, but number of step-by-step pictures for each knot offset that. Based on the fact that this book is intended as an encyclopedia and it fulfills that function very well, I give this book five stars. If this book were intended for a beginner, however, I would downgrade it to four stars because of the sheer number of knots, the lack of guidance to beginners as to which ones to learn, and the lack of warnings about knot uses (and misuses). The number of ste-by-step pictures keeps it from going to three stars. The Ashley Book of KnotsAs an encyclopedic work, The Ashley Book of Knots is not suitable for beginners. For knot aficionados, it's a must-have.Based on the fact that this book is intended as an encyclopedia and it is in fact the standard reference work for knots, I give it five stars. If this book were intended for a beginner, however, I would downgrade it to three stars because of the sheer number of knots and the fact that it was published in 1944, which means that it does not satisfactorily address modern synthetic ropes.ConclusionFor the beginner, that is, for the reader who simply wants to learn a few of the most useful knots, my pick is Budworth, The Complete Book of Knots. For an encyclopedia of knots, my pick is Budworth, The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots & Ropework. For the knot hobbyist or public library, The Ashley Book of Knots is a must-have.

Amazingly enough, I wasn't entirely satisifed with Mr. Budworth's book on decorative knots, The Complete Book of Decorative Knots. This one is different. Maybe it's because the knots in question are more for function than decoration, but I'm able to follow the directions easily. The selection of knots is pretty thorough and the inclusion of a description for where a given knot can be used is very helpful. I've found it very useful learning new knots and reviewing knots I've used in the past. I've been using it as a reference while teaching Scouts how to tie basic knots. It's been very handy.

This makes a good first book on tying knots. For the most part, the illustrative drawings showing how to tie various knots were clear and easy to follow. There were a couple of drawing errors and sometimes it wasn't always clear to me how I arrived at the next step. But once I practiced repeatedly tying the knot, it became clear. I've no regrets. Highly recommended for your knot-tying library.

Love it

I bought this book for the sole purpose of learning how to tie a simple slip knot. Slip knots are not mentioned in the book. Not a word. It takes balls to title your book "The Complete Book of Knots" without including any mention of such a simple and basic knot as the slip knot..

Great Books, by David Denby

Amazon.com Review

David Denby, New York city movie critic and journalist, entered Columbia University in 1991 to take the university's famous course in "Great Books." This is the course that, in preserving the notion of the western canon without apology to multiculturalists and feminists, has been an unlikely focus of America's culture war in recent years. Where other universities have caved in and revised or enlarged the canon, Columbia's course has remained intact. Denby's intention as a writer and protagonist in the culture war was to record the experience and the personal impact of the course. He has produced a cry from the heart in favor of the classics of western civilization, relaying with infectious enthusiasm how literature touched his soul.

From Publishers Weekly

Does a great books canon exist? Left-wing critics denounce the notion of a canon, while right-wingers often use it to assert unquestioned Western supremacy. This superb book suggests an answer. Denby, the film critic for New York magazine, returned to his alma mater, Columbia University, after 30 years to retake the two core curriculum courses, grapple with the world's classics and regenerate his own lapsed reading habit. It is a heartening portrait of (elite) American education and a substantial?sometimes enthralling?read. His teachers are committed pedagogues, the students a diverse (religious faith separates more than does ethnicity) and thoughtful lot. But the students are young, and the book's richest moments are when the mature Denby engages with the texts. Reading the tragedy of Oedipus Rex, he feels anxious, recognizing the ironic truth "[W]hat we avoid, we become." Hobbes's comments on the state of nature lead Denby to muse on insider trading and the time he was mugged. He contrasts Beauvoir's call for female liberty with the "Take Back the Night" antirape march on campus. Denby steps aside to interview academics and analyze the debate about the canon; he acknowledges that white male critics too long ignored the likes of Virginia Woolf, but resolutely argues for the seeking out of all great books, not merely ones that represent excluded groups. Why? Because the "Western classics were at war with each other," and learning to read Hegel and Marx, or the Bible and Nietzsche, is no lesson in indoctrination but the beginning of "an ethically strenuous education" and "a set of bracing intellectual habits." This book is about the experience of reading and thinking about the Great Books, so it is not merely a summary of the Great Books. The author does provide in the front of the book a list of the books in the Great Books courses at Columbia, (1) Literature Humanities and (2) Contemporary Civilization. At the end of the book he provides samples of previous reading lists. The author personalized the experience of reading and thinking about the Great Books. I particularly appreciated how on pages 203-205 (Interlude 5)a professor from Europe expressed disagreement over the use of such a course. The professor's point was that the great books were read in high school in Europe, and therefore was not suitable material for college. The European professor also disparaged the reading skills of American students. The author pointed out that it is exactly because American high schools neglect the Great Books that they should be studied in college, which helps improve the students' reading skills. We really should consider whether all colleges would benefit their students by making a similar Great Books course mandatory. It's a shame the Great Books are not studied in high school.

Note: This review is based on the unabridged audiobook narrated by Ed Asner."Great Books" is itself a great book. The surface plot involves Denby's returning to his alma mater, Columbia University, to revisit (some of) the great books of the Western canon as a middle-aged adult, 30 years after first reading them as a young undergraduate. But this is no superficial treatment focused on frivolities related to going back to school. Instead, Denby goes deep, thus making the book intellectually elevated in a manner which befits the great books (mixed metaphor intended). He covers a sampling of these books and probes them with sensitivity, thereby giving us insights which are often penetrating and profound, and sometimes even rather original. He didn't say so, but I imagine that his professors were pleased. An added plus, which is what makes the book uniquely special, is that we get to see the difference between Denby's response to these books as a mature adult versus his younger formative years. For those of us in our own middle years, Denby thus gives us a sense of what we might gain from returning to these books.I agree with Denby's ultimate conclusion. The primary reason for reading these books isn't that we become trained to (ethnocentrically) value Western culture, but rather that, by wrestling earnestly (and sometimes painfully) with these books, we're stimulated to grow as individuals, but still each on our own path.Last but not least, Ed Asner did a fabulous job of narrating the book, thereby rendering the audiobook perhaps even superior in some ways to the print version. And this is on top of Denby doing a fabulous job of writing the book itself.Needless to say, I highly recommend this book to anyone open to the possibility of growing via encounter with the great books (and great books about the great books).

I also returned to school to take undergraduate English classes as a man in my 40's. My reasons were different than Denby's, and my classes at our state university were not always high quality. I found his book almost like returning to Columbia. He shares the great wisdom and insight of his professors, while including sharp and relevant observations of his own. These "Great Books" are difficult, and having Denby and his professor put them in context is more than a little helpful. The whole post-structuralist movement has, in my opinion, been a trip down a dead-end road and Denby gives great--maybe not original--insight into where these theorists went wrong. He and others who share his views seem to have lost the battle from a 2011 perspective, and we are all worse off because of it.

Denby's THE GREAT BOOKS reads much like his movie reviews in THE NEW YORKER--intelligent, opinionated, and slightly forced, but almost always profitable. GREAT BOOKS recalls his mid-90s attempt to mediate the debate over the Western Literature canon and its place in the academy. He does this by re-enrolling at Columbia and taking the same core courses he had taken 30 years earlier. Although admittedly a liberal, he avoids the victumization syndrome that he believes the heirs of Nietzsche at the university have ironically created on the Left. The Right, however, also err in putting too much confidence in the canon's ability to raise up culture. Having placed himself in the middle, Denby can jab sometimes at the Left (the absurd attack upon Joseph Conrad) and the Right (feminist criticism did create a place at the table for Virginia Wolff). A hidden strength is his philosophical nuggets, such as the point that Kant's goal was to establish a moral philosophy that was absolute yet did not depend on the word of God.
