About the Author

Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003) was a British explorer and travel writer. He was born at Addis Ababa, Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). Educated at Eton and Oxford, he worked in the Sudan Political Service and and later, for a year, as a Political Officer for the Ethiopian Emperor, Haile Selassie. He is best known for two travel books: Arabian Sands (1959) and The Marsh Arabs (1964).   Rory Stewart (introducer) has written for the New York Times Magazine, Granta, and the London Review of Books, and is the author of The Places In Between and The Prince of the Marshes. A former fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the British government for services in Iraq.

I read this book when I was much younger and no one knew about this man nor much about Arabia. I was invited to be part of a team that would start an airline for the United Arab Emirates, a rather new country (formally the Trucial Coast- tribes that warred against each other and were Bedu and pearl divers). The airline was called Hamarein Air in about 1976 and was started by one little Bedu named Saif Hamarein. He owned small mini marts all over the Emirates, but especially in Ras al Khaima and Sharjah. he raised money from those to buy a 747!I read this book as I started departing from LAX and since the flight was over 27 hours with a stop in Paris and an over night, I finished it.This man, Sir Wilfred Thesiger was remarkable and although only 29 years old, struck off into uncharted lands even the Bedu did not dare cross. He traveled and lived among the tribes of all the areas he charted and learned amazing things from the nations. Because of him today, we learned much about a peoples unknown to the western world. I often wondered what happened to him and since we did not have computers, there was little way to actually look for him. He seemed to have vanished. But on my second time living among the Emirates in the 1990's, they found him in a mud hut in Africa being cared for by an Ethiopian woman and he had satchels of film never processed from his trips in the 1940's! I own 2 of these unpublished photos of his journeys and had the amazing pleasure of meeting my idol at 90+ years old! I cherish my photo with him. He was a remarkable man who did much to bring us the very news about corners of the earth he was later to regret as it brought westernization to the quiet countries and people he adored.

I'm only about a quarter through this book, and I'm enthralled. Takes you back to another world, before oil riches flowed, to a time when conditions were unrelentingly harsh and unforgiving, where the people were hard and austere, accustomed to a life of great demands and hardships, yet also capable of great courtesy and hospitality. The author explains why he was drawn into the desert and living with the Bedu and describes how the time he spent there was the happiest of his life.Thesiger served as a foreign service officer in Sudan for a number of years as a young man before setting off on his 2 crossings of the empty quarter in southern Arabia. He notes the great abundance of wildlife in Sudan: herds of thousands of elephants, an abundance of lions (he shot 70 himself on hunting trips while stationed there). It's such a sad shame that it's almost all gone now after years of poaching, over-hunting, and civil war. Though apparently there has been some return of these animals on a much smaller scale with some degree of peace in South Sudan.It's hard to imagine that a description of desert life--traveling with camels and how important they were to survival, the daily hardships and rituals of endurance that were just routine, the constant danger--would be fascinating, but it is.Even though Thesiger's travels happened only about 60 years ago, they seem taken from a different era, a much different and wild time. It is, for example, jolting to read that slavery still very much exists in Arabia at this time. And the religious fundamentalism is striking too: for example, a Beduoin is taken aback when Thesiger tells him that in England they have weathermen who can tell you when it is going to rain; the Bedu think that is something only God knows and that it is blasphemy to say otherwise.

This is one of the all time great adventure and travel books. Thesiger describes a world and a lifestyle that is now passed away, but existed not very long ago. He was the last of the British explorers who can nonchalantly describe things like going without water for days at a time as if his local deli had forgotten to include sugar packets with his order of coffee.If you read this book, you should also catch the documentary about Thesiger on the Journey Pictures channel on YouTube. In it, you can hear him, shortly before his death, reflect on his life and adventures. The filmmakers also visit and interview Thesiger's Bedouin companions and contrast their past and contemporary lives. The juxtaposition and contrast is interesting to watch and ponder.

Great, interesting read. I also gave this book to my mom and it provided for conversation about what my mom wants for herself as she ages.It is not something you think of, end of care life, but a reality that should be addressed. Grateful to read the book and share with my mom.

As a baby boomer who has learned, all too painfully, and all too accidentally, that sometimes the best care a patient can receive is palliative in nature, I found Hope for a Cool Pillow to be a compelling read. As elucidated by the author, we rarely, if ever, speak of death to the people we love. Consequently, we endure their final days, and ours, unprepared and in ignorance, aware of only what the doctors have chosen to tell us. Surgeons operate on dying patients,not to save them, but for a litany of unrelated reasons that serve to spare healthcare providers from difficult conversations about the prognoses and wishes of their patients. All of this, of course, takes place against a backdrop of laws that give patients the “right” to fall out of bed to avoid “confinement,” and hospitals improving their profit margins by causing more pain and suffering under the guise of prolonging life, financially incentivized to keep patients in the hospital while the cost of that care continues to spiral out of control. How then, does one go about writing a book about such a difficult subject matter as end of life issues that will not only engage, but benefit the reader? In Hope for a Cool Pillow, Margaret Overton succeeds, on both counts, by drawing the reader into her own, exceptionally well-told story. As a loving daughter, she has had to cope with the deaths of both parents; a cancer-stricken father who, while healthy, had regularly provided his family with updates of his advance directives, and a mother who had long suffered from dementia. As a practicing anesthesiologist, she has witnessed both the recoveries and deaths of many patients. All too frequently, doctors have disingenuously promoted the unrealistic hope of recovery, adding still another layer of suffering to already traumatized families unable, or unwilling, to let their parents or spouses die. Writing with clarity, eloquence, an incredible memory for details, and with both compassion and humor, yet without even a touch of arrogance, the author engages us, evokes our empathy and compassion for her and her family, as well as her patients, and makes us laugh at, and, ultimately, recognize the absurdity of our failure to “know what we don’t know,” especially when it comes to end of life issues. In this case, it may be true that “what we don’t know won’t kill us.” But the increased knowledge and motivation offered by this book can help us better prepare for, and cope with an inevitable adversity that need not be so painful.Mark Schwartz

We are privileged to have the viewpoint of a practiced physician (and skilled, humorous writer) dealing with the topic of end of life issues and her ability to reflect on the situations of patients (as an outsider) but also her own family (as an insider). The book is highly relatable and, if we take the message to heart, it is empowering - not only for us but for our loved ones. I can't think of anyone that I know personally that couldn't stand to benefit from reading this.

This is a very good all-around reference guide for drawing things in perspective. I would highly recommend it to more advanced artists who want to take their drawing skills to the next level. The illustrations are very good. I teach perspective drawing and I wanted to see if this book would delve more into the unique aspects of perspective drawing, from distortion to rendering unusual and complex perspectives. This book does that. I would not give it a high recommendation for someone just starting out, though. I think it's a bit too intimidating for a beginner, but still a good book.

This is not a primer on perspective, look to d'amelio's Perspective Handbook for an entry level book. Raynes excellent book takes perspective to the next level, beyond the basics and into real applications. Shadows, uneven terrain, measuring points, reflections, varying eye levels; all covered here in crystal clear examples.Again, look somewhere else for a first book on perspective. This is for more advanced perspective studies.

This is the book I reach for most often when I have a question about perspective. The diagrams, photographs, example, and explanations are clear. The book also includes an number of more advanced topics that are useful and not as well described in other books. If you buy this book check the diagrams carefully because some copies appear to have a printing defect such that diagram lines were printed in too light making them impossible to interpret.

John Raynes is not only a fine and competent artist, but an outstanding writer and teacher. This book does not gloss over the technical complexity of perspective drawing, but keeps it very accessible and learnable. John does a great job of explaining concepts in extremely understandable terms. He's also (as in all his other books) illustrated it beautifully with both photos and drawings, using each where most appropriate. Good book for beginner to relatively advanced artist.

Even if you have a good grasp of the basics the review is worth the time and takes you to a much better grasp of advanced uses of perspective. Thought I would try something different--I usually get the Sierra Club engagement calendar. Positives for this calendar-- heavy, good quality paper for the pages, clear print. In addition to the week on one side, there are three months (current, previous, and future) displayed which is nice for scheduling or looking ahead without flipping pages. Also, there is an area for general notes for the week, separate from the notes area for each day of the week. These are all nice features. The negatives for this calendar is that the pages are fairly small (6 inches wide by just under 8 inches tall). Because of the space allotted for the 3 month display and the general notes on the facing page, there is not much space for the photo, so all the photos are small. If the calendar were a bit bigger, the photos could be bigger. The photos are nice, but many of them do not "pop." Perhaps they are too realistic, like your own snaps? And perhaps I am wrong about "the photos could be bigger" -- maybe their resolution is such that you could not make them bigger without them getting blurrier.So, some nice features, but pages could be bigger and photos could be better. Decent calendar though.

Disappointing calender. Every year I purchase the brown trout lighthouse weekly planner. I purchase this calender for the pictures and this year the pictures are small and not impressive. This the pages are not glossy as in previous years. The calender has taken a big step down from last year.

I have been using these calendar books for over 20 years and was disappointed in the new design of this year's book. Instead of a full picture on one page facing the engagement page it now has only half a picture on the picture page with note space below. There has always been more than enough space on the engagement page to make any needed notes so it seems like a waste to me.

It's clear, have good examples, figures and everything so you can understand how to do CRM at the beginning and a preview for what could come on.If you know about CRM, this book could be kinda boring..but if you don't care about reading from the beginning again..get it! It's good for coaching.

I was hoping for a lot more around the Management part of CRM, not just about system solutions. Clearly the author has implemented systems, but only touches the surface of the rest of the process

We are currently in the process of evaluating a number of CRM products, and while the examples provided in this book are a bit dated, this book's philosophy is very much current. This book has helped to supplement my understanding of CRM and to has been instrumental in helping to shape our organizational approach to this expensive and time consuming investment. Well worth the read.

Excellent CRM book; the only problem is that it has become a little dated. With the advent of "Big Data", many of the concepts are not as relevant as they once were.

Ms Dyché dedicates the book to her mother, June Dyche, "who set the book-writing precedent early, and well". I would add, extremely well, and, with the book in my hands, have to also thank her for the excellent upbringing job.She introduces not only the how's of CRM but also, when appropriate, the why's, that is, not only the engineering but also the wisdom behind the subject.If a prerequisite to take part in a CRM project is to know what CRM is about and all critical issues in a successful CRM project, this book fulfills it.

I throughly enjoyed this book; it's attention to detail and the information contained within it's pages made for a unique glimpse into the world of Porsche.If you have an interest in Porsche, Formula 1, racing or automobiles in general this is an exceptional read. There are a number of truly distinctive stories as well as a number of amazing photographs.I had a wonderful time reading this book and recommend it highly !!

I enjoyed this book. I have followed and owned Porsches for many years yet there were some things that were new to me I liked the mix of photos with written text
