I use this book with my students. It's not perfect, but there's not a lot to choose from. A few observations:1) It uses European Spanish. This means some things sound odd, or even confusing, to Latin Americans like me.2) It has errors. I purchased the Kindle version of the new edition that will be released in paper in November 2018. This edition eliminated the dragon story and added a space story about a capsule. This story seems rushed, and it not only has errors in the Spanish, but also one in the story itself. Hiring a proofreader won't hurt.3) It contains too many low frequency words. This is most definitely not for beginners. Some words are unknown even to natives, such as pergamino in the Knight story. I re-typed part of a story into a text editor where I use a user dictionary containing the top 20K Spanish word forms. There's about 6-10% of word forms OUTSIDE THE TOP 20K! Something written for "beginners" should focus on high-frequency words instead. Anything beyond 2% unknown words becomes a chore.4) Reading is made difficult by the names. Some stories use really odd names instead of native Spanish names. This makes reading more difficult even for natives.5) As for the stories themselves, the first one is boring. The second one is mildly interesting. The remaining ones are more interesting and I kept reading them like I would with native materials. But sometimes you wonder if something was lost in the translation (Remember Olly's native language is English), because it can be difficult to follow what's going on.

I'm a Spanish beginner (English is my first language) and it can be hard to find stories that are put together well enough to be fun, yet have a depth of variety—in both vocabularly and grammar—to be worthwhile. These stories fill an important slot in my learning process, when I don't want to do vocab flashcards, or read real-world articles, or use apps like DuoLingo, etc.I'm docking a star because there are occasional errors/typos, especially in the end-of-chapter summary/vocab sections. But it's not egregious (I'd make it a 4.5 star review if I could). I even contacted the author on Twitter and he said an update was forthcoming that should sync to my Kindle automatically.I would definitely purchase a 2nd set of such stories if one came out.

Finally, I have found a reading tool that actually helps me, rather than frustrates me. Olly Richards has put together a great combination of teaching and fun reading. For me, his instructions on how to read the stories takes all of the "I will never get this!" feeling away, and it is awesome to have enjoyable short stories specifically targeted to my level. Plus the short quizzes at the end to ensure that you understood the story are a great addition. My opinion is that this is a must-have addition for anyone seriously learning Spanish. One note, however - it is written in Castilian Spanish, not Latin American Spanish, so if you have been studying mainly Latin American Spanish (like me) there will be a few times when you have to use your own dictionary or on-line translator in addition to the provided vocabulary list after each story. This has not bothered me at all, as 99% of the time, I understand the gist of the paragraph without having to interrupt and translate.I highly recommend this book. The confidence it gave me when I realized I could read MUCH more than I previously thought - it was and continues to be a great boost to continue my studies and to me not feeling 'stuck.' I look forward to getting to the next level and purchasing the next level of Spanish Short Stories. Big thanks to Olly Richards for providing an enjoyable and essential learning tool.

This book isn't mean to be rated using Amazons rating buttons for books. I had to click on of them to get to the typing part so I chose predictable. But of course it is. This is a Spanish reader for those seeking to learn Spanish, like me. It's written with the learner in mind and the story aspect is just to help you learn new words. So far, I've found it very helpful in that regard. I am reading it using Kindle so it gives me the ability to click on a word and have it translated into English so if I don't know one and can't figure it out using context I can still learn. This book was $1.99 when I purchased it and it's worth every penny as a way to help learn a second language.

The author has the right idea for what a book of introductory short stories for learning a foreign language should be. It is good that there is no accompanying English text--is is better for the reader to figure out the puzzle of reading a foreign language without such training wheels! The author works into his stories the kind of words that a tourist needs, rather that load you up with arcane vocabulary words. There is one odd thing about these stories however. I have started reading the author's book of introductory Italian short stories and the first story is identical to the to the first story in this book! Only the names of the cities, characters, and food have been changed--every event in the Spanish book correspond to an event in the Italian book! Stay tuned as I read more of the Italian stories!

Fun, fun, fun!!! Oh wow, so I've read a few of Mr. Richards' short stories in different languages (and about to start another one here shortly), and they are tons of fun and I honestly do believe that I am catching on to some words. I love the way he starts out with telling how the easiest way to try to learn it through reading, then to go back with a little bit more understanding, and then again as you catch on more. But he makes this learning fun! It's not the monotonous drowning of repeat the word over and over. I was fortunate to have received this book complimentary in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

The Lantern Bearers is the fourth in Rosemary Sutcliff's loosely-connected series about a Roman family in ancient Britain. The story begins when the last Roman legions are leaving Britain. Beseiged by wars with Germanic tribes on the European mainland, the empire can no longer afford to spend any of its military capital fighting off Saxon invaders on this remotest of its territories which it had by now largely abandoned, anyway. Young Aquila, a cavalry officer in the Roman army, is spending a rare leave with this father and sister on his family's homestead when he is urgently recalled to duty. Immediately upon his return he learns that preparations are being made for the last boatload -- literally -- of Roman legions to leave the island of Britain forever.Over the ensuing few days Aquila wrestles with his thoughts and feelings and finally, at the last moment, realizes that, though he considers himself a Roman, Britain is his home. His family has lived on the island for generations, he knows his father and sister will never leave, and he decides that he cannot leave either. So he hides in the lighthouse on the coast and watches while his ship sails off without him, then makes his way back to his family's villa.Just three days later his world is forever turned upside down when Saxons raid his home, burning it to the ground, killing his father, carrying off his sister, and leaving him tied to a tree in the woods for the wolves to find. By an ironic turn of events he is rescued and taken to the homeland of the Jutes (present-day Denmark) as a slave. Desolate at the loss of his beloved father and sister and the only life and world he has known, beset by bitter loneliness in a strange land, the desire to find his sister is the only thing that keeps him going. Thus begins The Lantern Bearers, a story that traces Aquila through the ensuing decades of his life as he journeys through hatred, grief, desolation and bitterness in a quest first to find revenge and then to find some measure of peace. At the same time the story traces the story of Britain as it gradually loses the influence of Rome and descends into the Dark Ages.As always, Sutcliff's writing is lovely, detailed and evocative, whether she is describing the British countryside, or a battle scene, or the physical decay of society in the wake of Rome's departure from the island. Unlike her earlier books in this series, The Lantern Bearers really isn't about a young man's quest for honor or bravery, and doesn't involve adventure per se. Instead, it explores, through the life of Aquila, the painful overtaking of an older culture (in this case the Romano-Celts of Britain) by invaders (the Saxons). The bitterness, hatred, crossed loyalties, fragile peace and uneasy acceptance that Sutliff so skillfully depicts resonated with poignant realism; I am sure this is how it was in the many times in Britain's history (and that of other parts of the world as well) when two vastly different peoples battled for the same piece of ground, and their cultures (as inevitably happens) uneasily merged. The book also introduced the character of young Artos; the amount of attention given him, and the fact that he was a Romano-Celtic young man who was a charismatic battle leader, made it obvious that he was the King Arthur of legend. I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see how Sutcliff develops his story.

The third volume in Rosemary Sutcliff's Roman Britain Trilogy, THE LANTERN BEARERS is set roughly 300 years after her first, THE EAGLE OF THE NINTH in around 427 AD. 18-year-old Aquila is just starting out on life, and has spent a year as a commander of the Rhenus Horse Auxiliary Cavalry. What happens in the first few pages of this novel changes him for life, from an open-minded pleasant young man to someone who is not well-liked.But Ms. Sutcliff has done such a wonderful job in showing us Aquila's life both before and after, that even though he is not a likable character, one cannot help rooting for him.By and by he acquires a wife and a son, but nothing can take away the awfulness of what happened to him. Eventually, however, he finds a certain kind of peace, and the last image of the book is both consoling and realistic. This book won the Carnegie Medal in 1959. More than just a fictional account of history, this book engages the reader at a deep level, forcing us to feel the agony of the difficult choices Aquila has to make. Five stars.

My 13 year old son, who has only read for information, never a story for enjoyment. Well Mrs. Sutcliff changed all that - he now owns his own copies of the three stories from this exceptionally well written history of Britain. The series begins with the Eagle of the Ninth (movie version is The Eagle), followed by The Silver Branch and finally with The Lantern Bearers. Some of the reviews of this book present a dark, somber story. The story definately has those elements, but there is redemption and hope for Aquila. My 10 and 13 year old boys enjoy the story as our history - so give it a try.My only negative is I would much prefer a hardcover!

Most people know the drill already regarding Rosemary Sutcliff: she wrote beautiful, melancholy children's books on key moments in British dark ages history that are so complex and beautiful that they appeal to adults as well. As many reviewers have noted, "The Lantern Bearers" is just such a "children's" book, but will appeal to readers of any age who enjoy rousing tales based on both fact and legend. This book follows the adventures of a Roman soldier who decides to stay in Britain when the legions depart in the early 5th century. He is quickly captured and enslaved by the invading Saxons but manages to escape and join the Romano-British resistance to the Saxon onslaught. This is one of Sutcliff's finest--surpassed only by its adult-oriented sequel, "Sword At Sunset"--and her prose captures the sadness of seeing the end of an era. But like many of her books, it also has a message of redemption and hope and ends on an uplifting note. The action is gripping, the characters are three dimensional and interesting, and the historical detail is astounding. Highly highly recommended.

This trilogy is awesome if you are into this type period literature. Rosemary Sutcliff pulls you into the story so it is as if you are watching the events take place.

Rosemary Sutcliff was the Grande Dame of historical fiction in the modern era. She set the standards high, not only for historical accuracy but also in beautiful writing. If you want to understand the reality of Britain in Roman and post-Roman times, she is the author to read. Her story moves along at a brisk pace, building as it goes until you are totally invested in the characters. It is not only history that she writes but that which moves the human heart. Read the entire trilogy in order - they are easy reads and will move you in unexpected ways.

Impressive, tells the brutal storey of the human struggle (following the Roman withdrawal from Britian) of the transition from the roman provincial life to the barbarian life that followed.

I advise those perusing these reviews to take with a measure of salt the dogmatic pronunciations on the quality of Rose's translation. Provenance is important, and one should always "consider the source." (Yes, even with me.)A number of interviews with Rose are available online, in which she discusses her work, and her work on this novel. The novel has a lengthy and detailed Translator's Preface, in which she discusses the novel, the translation process, and her approach to it. You also can find online some independent articles about this translation. The great translator of Spanish language literature, Edith Grossman, said:"I can't say what makes a book translatable, but I do think that all texts can be translated. The question of whether or not a work is "translatable" stems from a mistaken and widely held notion that a translation is really a one-for-one set of equivalences with the original--a straightforward lexical problem--when in fact it is a rewriting of the first text. Some, of course, are immensely difficult (they're usually just as difficult in the original) and challenge the translator's sensitivity to nuance, levels of meaning, and artistic impact in both languages. I see my work as translating meaning, not words."Rose has spoken similarly about her work."I think the essential difference is that...and I'm not saying that translators always have to do this, there are reasons for departing a little bit further from a writer's text where it just won't work in English. I found on the contrary what really worked better in English was to follow Hugo much more closely than anyone else seems to have done. So I've actually followed his syntax as closely as possible, I've followed the rhythm of his sentences and I've actually broken it up the way he has and stuck more closely to what he says." -- Julie Rose, interview, 2009She's translated more than thirty French works into English -- plays, poetry, novels, genre fiction. She worked on Les Miserables for three years. She has been awarded three international prizes for her translations. I'm willing to take the leap of faith -- she is "fluent in French." I recommend others accept the facts in plain sight, and do likewise.I stopped reading works in translation in the early 1980s, and didn't start up again until around 2005. The reason I stopped was that I concluded that I could not hear the author's voice in the translated work. The reason I started again was that Rose, Grossman, and some others showed that they understood this challenge, accepted it, and that it is possible to capture the author's voice in a translation, by actually listening to the author's intent.According to one account, the Rose translation is almost 100,000 words longer than the 1976 Denny "translation" -- that's how much material he excised from the novel to "improve it." Denny, in fact, is on record as saying that Victor Hugo was a terrible writer, and needed some "tidying up." If you're just looking to pad your reading CV with another of the "great books," then it doesn't matter which one you read. Might as well go with a shorter one. If you're looking to read the translation of Les Mis, that will make you feel like you are reading the original, hearing Victor Hugo's voice, then pick up Rose's translation.

Thank God I got the Kindle version for my Kindle Keyboard 3G. I read through 12% of the book before wondering 'how long will it take me to finish!!?". So I measured my reading speed pages-per-minute and estimated the total reading time for the entire book to be 64 hours. Seriously. So I took a different approach: I would read for an hour or two, then when fatigue started setting in, I pressed the "shift-sym" keyboard shortcut to activate text-to-speech, and just sat back or laid in bed while the kindle AI voice read it to me. This book famously takes place in France, and a lot of the names of people / places / streets are in French, so it's nice having the AI effortlessly pronounce them. My favorite was hearing it pronounce "Champs-Élysées" over and over again. It was pleasant, almost hypnotizing. Text-to-Speech allowed me to focus on the incredible story and not hassle through the pronunciations. Victor Hugo goes off on many tangents, such as 30+ page histories of the battle of waterloo, and the construction of the sewer system in Paris. It's quite fascinating and adds much to the story. There are many nuanced scenes that I continually go back to in my head, like the back passages behind the court room for transporting lawyers, and the one for transporting the criminals. And the ideas of whether a person can ever redeem themselves in society, contrasted with the situation that society is often times a poor judge of how to redeem oneself, and whether they should be deserving of redemption. It is an honest critique of criminal justice that is probably as relevant today as it was then.My understanding is that this "penguin classics" version has a better translation than the "free" version going around on the internet. It you're going to devote ~64 hours to an experience of life and death in old France, best put in a few bucks to get the best translation possible. For today's generation, the length of the story can be a bit jarring and leaves you wondering "will this story ever end?" I say this book is not at all to be treated as a story. It's not a television show. It's not a movie. It's not a musical. Les Miserables is an EXPERIENCE. So get the good version on Kindle, and have the AI voice continue the reading when fatigue starts to set in.

I am by no means a scholar . I cannot compare translations as this is the first book by Victor Hugo that I've read. After seeing the musical I decided to read the book. I'm glad that I did it in this order. Having seen the musical I did not get lost in the book's twists and turns and I had patience when the story went off into different avenues. Likewise I could selectively read the sections on history. I have always been moved by the story's theme of morality based on law versus morality rooted in love. This book is unquestionably worth reading!! The development of the characters and their struggles are so rich that I found myself crying during parts of the book. While the musical is a moving and touching story , it is nothing compared to the book itself. The best compliment I can give to a book is that touched my life and that its main characters shall live on within my heart. My life is richer for having read this book. The many sections that I have highlighted I shall revisit over and over for years to come.

The Small BIG: Small Changes that Spark Big Influence is a pretty good book on the topic of ethically persuading people to change their behaviour. Grounded in research and mixing discussion with examples, the book intrigued me enough that I jotted notes and my own ideas as I read. This is pretty rare these days for me, and a sign of how engaged I was.Running quickly through my notes.Changing people's environment can change their minds. Context is important.Focus on similarities - shared identityYou can lock into other people's commitments (and the implication I took from this was that when companies ask us to filling surveys, they're not after feedback, but about the commitment we feel to the firm after we've committed our time via filling in the survey).A sense of owing your future self can motivate self-changeProcrastination - use short expiration datesA promise of potential (which has an arousing quality) outshines reality (this I hadn't expected)When an expert is uncertain, that intrigues us.We assume important people sit in the centre of a gatheringPower increases and our cortisol (stress hormone) levels decrease when we adopt open, expansive posture.Just ASKFocus people on the opportunity cost of not doing what you want them to do.And the notes go on.Shortish chapters, engaging style. I got a lot from this book.

I bought this after hearing Martin interviewed on the HBR podcast. And I love the concept - there are many ways to use observations from human behavioral science to direct best practice. Moreover, many of these are easy to implement and have pronounced effects - hence the concept of the "small BIG".The organization of the book is not its strength. The chapters are really short vignette case studies designed by the authors to be digested in tiny chunks. Really tiny chunks. Unfortunately, this does not allow for serious discussion of the diversity of applications of each observation or the specific limitations of each approach. In one example, British taxpayers (apparently often quite delinquent in prompt tax payments) were reminded that the majority of taxpayers do remit taxes on time, and the effects were real. However, there is less question as to whether this would work in different cultures, under different tax systems, or other related concerns. Will this approach really change the fates of accounts receivable professionals? That said, some of the lessons are fantastic. As an administrator in medicine, I was fascinating at the approach taken to patient "no-shows", which have a double-whammy effect. First they create situations in which medical professionals are deployed but not reimbursed. Just as importantly, they prevent patients from being seen! If one calls to make an appointment that is booked by a patient who then no-shows, the patient who wishes to come in cannot receive care yet is blocked by a patient who has not used that slot. And in most markets, access is at a premium. I will not give away the authors' intervention, but it is shockingly simple - so shocking that I would like to really see whether it works. In any case, this book is certainly worth a read, and I would read other books by the same authors. I just wish that they had selected fewer topics on which to delve more deeply rather than to create a well-meaning, but underdeveloped, sampler.

The strength of "The Small BIG' " is also its weakness. Many business books rely on one big idea that would make a compelling article, but after 200 pages of using Amazon-Zappos-flavour-of-the-year organisations, to retrospectively prove a point, irritation overwhelms insight."The Small BIG" strength is that it packs 50+ tips into short, sharp chapters. Each one has some neuroscience/behavioural economics/testing to validate it. Many won't cost a cent & are claimed to boost response rates. The 50+ is also the weakness - I read the book a few weeks back, recommended it to a client who relies on direct marketing, yet now, writing this review, cannot remember one specific example.Perhaps I am suffering from end of year brain-drain (writing this on 17th December) - however I think this book works best as a reference for direct marketers. Some of the best business books adjust thinking. "The Small BIG" modifies actions. In the right hands, it can be a great investment.

I bought this book after seeing some of their videos they have on YouTube. I have not been disappointed.I run a few online affiliate sites, and the ideas in this book have been worth gold. There are 50 chapters each with different research on marketing, psychology, and/or sociology, with the key lesson on how something very small can have a large change in your influence of others. It's easy to read and well written. A must for anyone in marketing, sales, or anyone who needs to influence others.

If you need to persuade, either professionally or personally, you'll find some new science-based approaches in this book. Each of the 52 chapters begins with experimental results, either academic or real-world, and shows how the principle demonstrated can be applied in other situations. The emphasis, as the title suggests, is on small changes that can have an outsized impact on results.Written by three of the world's top experts on influence and persuasion, this book's authority is unquestionable. (And, as their past work has demonstrated, "authority" is potent stuff!)With its bite-sized chapters and actionable strategies, The Small BIG belongs on every business bookshelf.

Would've given 5 stars if it was more original. Love Cialdini, but there isn't much "new" stuff here if you have read his other books. Just felt like further elaboration on experiments already discussed in his other books. Kind of disappointed, but if this is your first Cialdini book you'll probably enjoy it more than I did.

Whether this is your first foray into the world of Nero Wolfe or have dined at his table for years, The Doorbell Rang is well worth the reading although to my mind it is not ne plus ultra of the canon. If you are looking for a literate, funny and densely plotted old-fashioned whodunit, you will find none better than the Nero Wolfe series. The Doorbell Rang is kind of unusual in that it squares off against the FBI as an abusive, vindictive and malicious organization even though Stout mostly avoids plots with a political overtone. While he doesn't let the agency quite off the hook by the conclusion, he doesn't slaughter them either, and that ambiguity won't please everyone.Though fairly new to the Wolfe series myself, I've been on a Nero Wolfe binge for the last couple of months and have downed at least 25 servings so far. These books are pure comfort food.Tasty, engaging and easy to digest.Wolfe, if you haven't met him, is a genius detective and recluse, a lovable if misogynistic agoraphobe and an obese, worldly, and deeply educated gourmand. Also a grammar snob and sesquipedalian.Archie Goodwin, Wolfe's factotum, besides being the reclusive master's fast-dancing contact to the streets, is a talented private detective with a smart lip, fondness for women, and tape-recorder memory. Classic-mystery fans will appreciate that Archie is also a better-rounded and more believable and smarter character than Sam Spade. And by the way it is Hammett's Sam Spade, not Chandler's Philip Marlowe whom Archie most closely resembles. Archie is pure New York, a wiseacre and an adept practitioner of that creative slang common to the inner boroughs in the 1920s and 30s. Think colorful, not coarse. As in "he was sitting on the back of his lap." He doesn't tip a cab driver he "shows the hackie a finif." Wolfe's shirt is "a few acres of canary yellow cotton." Or he'll make an off-beat observation like, "The trouble with mornings is that they come when you're not awake." Like nearly all Nero Wolfe mysteries, The Doorbell Rang saddles the great detective with a seemingly impossible task, and though he has probably guessed the who in the whodunit early on he won't spell it out ("open the bag on the full crop" as Archie would say) until he can cinch it conclusively, and earn his exorbitant fee, before the always-stumped NYPD homicide branch beat him to the punch. In this case we are led to believe that FBI agents have murdered a journalist who was hoovering up (ahem) dirt on the agency. Wolfe's wealthy client is simultaneously suffering FBI harassment in an unrelated matter. Wolfe's task is not to prove the FBI agents did the murder but to prove they did not, and then trade that revelation to the Feds in return for a promise they will lay off his client forever. If I have one plot criticism of this tale it is that there is a red herring introduced early on that is never resolved. I won't spell it out in case you haven't read the book yet, but it's something to do with the client's buried secrets. In most Wolfe mysteries there are no red herrings at all. Naturally the fun is going through all the likely suspects and trying to eliminate them or focus on them, much as Archie does. Leads and hints may peter out, but doesn't throw curve balls the way many writers do, and normally picks up all the marbles before tying a knot on the bag.Stout's passionate loathing of J. Edgar Hoover at the time this book was written, about 1965, may have sprung from having been falsely accused of Communist leanings by a Republican congressional committee back in the early 50s. But back in 1965 it was not generally known what a dangerous, fanatical bastard Hoover was.Wolfe's witty obsession with good grammar raises a major beef I have developed with this title and all the others I have consumed in the Bantam Books reissues: Way too many typos and sentence errors. I'm reading the Kindle versions and don't know if the print editions suffer the same textual faults, but these digital versions frequently pull me up short with mangled sentences, missing or redundant punctuation, or a clause from one sentence transposed into another. Or part of a sentence repeated part! of a sentence" twice, and.,redundant missing...see what I mean? This is especially irksome because Rex Stout, and his editor Marshall Best, whom I knew slightly, were exceptionally careful about grammar and typography. If you want a demonstration that the listed publisher, Bantam, and its ilk in modern-day publishing just don't give a damn about the language, the reader, or the author whose works they plunder for profit, consider the meagre extra investment it would have taken to hire a competent proof reader for a few hours. We're probably talking about something like $500 and possibly a good deal less. I admit I do not understand how a book that's been in print for 50 years can acquire new typos it wasn't born with, and has escaped through middle age without, but assume it has something to do digitizing text on the cheap and then not bothering to read it through.Bottom line: A very enjoyable read with an unusual--for Stout--political angle, and a satisfying conclusion that probably wouldn't quite cut it today.

This is one of Stout's better books in the series, for a number of reasons. The plot is fascinating, and Stout doesn't make the mistake he sometimes does of having too many characters but not really giving them unique personalities. There is some really great humor in this book, and it has a unique and interacting interaction between Inspector Cramer and Archie Goodwin. If you like Nero Wolfe books, you will probably really enjoy this one. The only thing is that the murder is solved fairly early on, and the reader isn't given many clues to try to solve it on their own, but it's still a lot of fun to read. The ending is particularly funny.

I have been a fan of Rex Stout for at least fifty years and have probably read all of his mysteries including those not including Nero Wolfe and Archie. They never disappoint, and it was fun to reread this novel and revisit old friends: all of the detective gang with mentions even of Doc Vollmer, Lewis Hewitt, Nathaniel Parker and Marko Vukcic. The Nero Wolfe novels do not need to be read in order. There are a few things that change over time, but nothing that interferes with understanding the current book. And they all tend to satisfy. In this book, Wolfe takes on Hoover's FBI in a way that anyone could appreciate. If you have not read any of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories before and you like mysteries, do jump in. These are classics and well worth reading.

I consider The Doorbell Rang to be one of Stout's best mysteries, even though the murder itself proved to be very straightforward once the vital missing clue was revealed. This reveal happens before the denouement, but because of the complexity of the plot, it doesn't lessen the enjoyment of the final wrap-up.It's a testament to Stout's skill that the final scene is even more, as Wolfe would say, "Satisfactory," to the reader. If you can only read one Nero Wolfe mystery, this is the one to pick. It's a classic!

Rex Stout never disappoints, even after all this time. I have read the Nero Wolfe mysteries for 50 years, and it's amazing how well they've held up, even if Archie does spend a lot of time looking for a phone booth! The Doorbell Rang was probably the last book in the series...Fer-de-Lance was the first. Start there and enjoy!

Just when I think I've read all the Nero Wolfe books, I discover another. This time it's The Doorbell Rang. This time Nero Wolfe crosses J. Edgar Hoover when Nero's new client tires of being followed under the guise of a security matter. I love that there's plenty of twists and turns and couldn't wait to discover who rings the doorbell at the end and whether Nero - or actually Archie answers. A great read!

In a series of wonderful mysteries, this stands out as exceptional. Everything works. It is the best of the best.A comment made concerning the FBI, "the FBI is untouchable", gave me the shivers because this book, written in the 1960's, indicates an FBI which operates outside the law. How similar we find that organization in 2018.

I have this book five stars because Nero went up against The FBI and won and solved the mystery with one stone.I really like Archie, he really does the foot work and he is somewhat of a ladies man at times. These books are really refreshing from the hard thriller mysteries with bad language and sex scenes every time you turn a page. There is nothing I don't like about Nero Wolfe. This only my 3rd book of his series but I'm going through them and not in order. For those of you who have not gotten around to reading one give it a try. I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU!You should not be disappointed.
