Every one of Donna Leon's novels is worth reading. The characters are well drawn and while the mysteries seem local to Venice, most of the time they touch on some really important global problem such as: white slavery, drugs, repression of women, etc. I recently returned from a trip to Italy. The tour guide said that while Donna Leon is American, every Italian is familiar with her work.
Ever since a friend introduced me to Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti series, I have been enthralled by them. The Commissario is a wonderful character. He is calm in the midst of power struggles within the police department, tough when necessary and quite gallant. This time out he and his team are investigating murders that appear to involve a Venetian travel agency promoting travel to places where the child sex slave market is a flourishing business. Peace in the Brunetti family is disrupted. One of the great joys of this series is the Brunetti family. Donna Leon has created fully human, sometimes very contrary people.I'd also like to point out one of my favorite's in Brunetti's office, the elegant and fashionable Signorina Elettra, who is able to find any information needed on her computer and through her extensive network of contacts. She could be the patron saint and roll model for Adminitrative Assistants!!!Fatal Remedies speeds along and I found it nearly impossible to put down.
I have read many of Donna Leon's books in this series. This one is definitely as good as the last seven and one of the better ones for the writing. Leon mixes Guido's family life in with his professional life as a commissario of police. This one particularly intertwined as a close relative is apprehended. Guido's integrity is stretched when his world's collide. Very good book.
Always love Donna Leon's books. I feel like Brunetti is my pal, and I could go knock on his door and have him and Vianello show me around Venice. Wouldn't that be awesome?? Have a drink with Paola and pick her brain about a milion things. Leon's characters make you feel like they're old friends or friends that you'd LIKE to have!
Fatal remediesA of powerful look into the marriage of police DetectiveCommissario Guido Brunetti and his professor wife Paola and their marriage problems and and strong differences. This is one of author Donna Leon's most engaging and intriguing novels offers series of the Italian detective earnestly. Every page is riveting with the issues of corruption, social moral and immoral issues and behavior, and unpleasant but real look at political posturing. At some point you as the reader will find that you also have to take a stand. As in all her novels that take place in Venice Italy is fun and informative to travel around the old historical city with Commissario Brunetti, a man that I have learned to admire and respect ( even if he is only a made-up character, one that I'd love to see come alive on the screen. Who would play him though?) This book is a most intriguing whodunit story. As a fan of Ms. Leon's series, I must say this is one of her best.
Donna Leon weaves this story around enigmas and roadblocks. Brunetti is a wonderful character. Somehow he deals with Sophia breaking the law. He takes the case in his jaw and twists it like a dog to find the true evil.
Well, am not sure about this novel. I like all her books and all the characters are well described. You begin to know them. I just found the wife's actions and the husbands reactions to this a bit odd. I think I would have been a lot angrier. Still, maybe there are couples like that. Not my favourite in her books but definitely won't put me off adding any of her others. She writes well and the stories are always good. The endings are also clever in that they are not usually about the bad guy getting caught and put in jail forever! Sometimes corruption wins!
I am reading them in order and definitely not bored with the characters or setting. Something new and believable in each one. This one especially timely with sex slave trade story line connected to other line
