Wow. I could not put this book down. I’m grateful for DeYoung’s careful analysis and thoughtful explanation of each commandment — how it was understood at that time, how it relates to other laws, how Christ has fulfilled and transformed each law, and how we can faithfully observe them in light of Jesus. Discussions surrounding the Ten Commandments often devolve into arguments about legalism and relativism, but I found myself marveling at the goodness of God to provide us with these laws as DeYoung painstakingly unpacks them. I finished each chapter longing to worship God. 10/10 would recommend to anyone seeking to understanding the relevance of the Ten Commandments in our lives today.
Oftentimes funny (Jane Austin scene), always grounded in the foundational truths of the ten words of God. Recommended reading in a post-truth world.
I first became acquainted with Kevin DeYoung's writing at the Gospel Coalition website and his blog: DeYoung, Restless, and Reformed. So I'm familiar with some of his writing. Readers should know that, theologically, this book is written by a Christian from the Reformed/Calvinist tradition. It's also written for laypeople -- but it's not dumbed down or folksy, just very readable and intelligent. The introduction starts with a humanistic list of commandments which DeYoung briefly addresses questioning why certain "commandments" were selected by its authors. The answer is that we do have a moral code in western civilization and that its root is in the Ten Commandments. The contemporary church has drifted away from teaching these systematically - yet they're still relevant today.DeYoung then takes each commandment, in turn, and thoughtfully outlines them. He puts each commandment in context as a whole, then breaks down what issues the commandment addresses today. He talks about what is forbidden by each commandment and how the commandments actually give life and bring peace to our lives.Depending on your church background, you might not always agree with his theology. But the practical advice he provides in each chapter is worth discussing and implementing. A study guide at the end provides questions for reflection and discussion. I'm going to recommend that my Sunday School class use this as a study -- even though we're not in a Reformed tradition congregation. This is well worth the read and reflection. Happy to have this in my library. Definitely will recommend to friends.
Many modern Christians treat the Ten Commandments as quaint or archaic prohibitions at best, or the source of legalism at the more negative end of the spectrum. Fortunately, one of God’s men will periodically provide a sober and considered reminder of the depth and breadth of these commands and how each applies to our lives today. Kevin DeYoung is that man for this hour in the life of the Church. This short book looks to the commandments recorded in Exodus chapter 20 and DeYoung expands the often narrow understanding of each in order to re-educate the Church. Taking the Lord’s name in vain, for example, is often limited to a curse that involves the name of God. As DeYoung rightly points, the breadth of what is covered in this prohibition makes the Christian think long and deep about their lives in light of this expanded understanding. The most challenging chapters address the current sexualization and materialistic nature of the modern culture. Most Christians understand what Jesus alluded in pointing out that lust in our minds is as much adultery as physical contact. When confronted with the whole of scripture and its boundaries around healthy sexual relationships, adultery and its life altering consequences become infinitely more important and can trip us in up in unexpected places. With careful study in another chapter, the blithe acceptance in our culture of materialism and the constant desire for more than we have, the commandment prohibiting covetousness confronts Christians head on.My prayer for this book is that it will find its way into many, many hands in the years ahead and become a standard for discipleship. It calls us to account for things that we would often prefer to dismiss within our faith. Thank you Pastor DeYoung.
This Ten Commandments book by Kevin DeYoung discusses from the author’s perspective the Ten Commandments and how they apply to today’s world. The book includes one chapter for each commandment, as well as an introduction, epilogue, and study guide. An example is chapter 6, the 6th Commandment, you shall not kill. DeYoung says, simply put, this commandment prohibits the taking of innocent human life. This does not include self-defense, capital punishment, nor war in certain circumstances, but does include premeditated, intentional murder as well as suicide, abortion, and euthanasia. He says Jesus transformed this commandment saying that not only does it prohibit violent acts of murder, but all violent emotions and intentions of the heart. DeYoung includes bible verses to support his conclusions. While I personally did not agree with all of his conclusions, it was interesting to read his perspective.
