Dr. Rajib Maity is Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. His research areas include hydroclimatology, stochastic hydrology, climate impacts on water resources, hydrologic time series analyses and forecasting etc. He has published a book on ‘Hydroclimatic Teleconnection: Indian Perspective’, several book chapters, and over 80 research articles in various peer-reviewed journals and conferences. His research work has been funded by various agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) and IBM. Some of his professional awards/honors include Humboldt Fellowship (experienced category) from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), James Rennell MoES Young Fellowship (MoES), the Prof. R.J. Garde Research Award, ASCE 2011 Outstanding Reviewer (USA), Emerging Leaders Fellowship (Australia), BOYSCAST Fellowship (India/USA), IEI Young Engineers Award, DAAD fellowship for IIT faculty (Germany), International ICE WaRM Fellowship (Australia), and Prof. N.S. I finished it up 3 days ago and just as I thought it was better than Tales From Mos Eisley. You will have 19 stories that are excellent; and they will introduce you to the Star Wars characters more. I found with each story, I knew more about the characters that were in Return of the Jedi; and what their plans were for Jabba the Hutt. If you thought all those minions in Jabba's Palace were is friends you have another thing coming. I would recommend this book to any die-hard Star Wars fan, too me it's a must. In Tales From Mos Eisley, there were a couple of stories I didn't care for In Tales From Jabba's Palace they were all good.THX,Kris L. CocKayne

Other than the Mara Jade chapter I really found my attention drifting.

Boba Fitt survives the pit -- not bring him back in the moves.

I can't say enough great things about this book. Each story gives the background of characters that never had a voice before. I was mesmerized by every one. After reading, I immediately ordered and read the other two books in this series. The first thing I did after taking my daughter to see The Force Awakens was buy her a copy of this book so she could enjoy the history associated with every character. This book was a wonderful idea and even better reality!

I've read over half of the short stories in this book and I have yet to discover where the praise for it comes from. My first Tales book was of the Bounty Hunters and I enjoyed three out of the five stories of that one. I decided to read this one because of the many reviews in TotBH saying it was a superior Tales book and the stories meshed better. I found out why the latter is true; because they are incredibly short and they cover a select few (mostly unimportant) people within a day or two experiencing practically the same thing! I liked the Skiff Guard and Ephant Mon's stories; Boba Fett and Mara Jade's were ok too; though I do agree with another reviewer who said her story was out of place, and to a lesser degree the Gamorrean's tale was also entertaining. I absolutely did not care for any mention of the brain monks that share the palace with Jabba (for some reason) or the Anzati(?) assassin's. I have a crazy idea; instead of writing short stories about these nobodies how about making some the better known characters' story longer and adding people like Lando, Leia, R2, or even (gasp) Jabba? As a few others have said this book is not for everybody, but if you must read it for whatever reason (I am a fan of Fett) borrow it from someone or the library. I am betting this book would've sold half as many copies if Zahn did not contribute to it. He is an accomplished writer but primarily for the characters he has created. 2.5-3 stars

This is an interesting book. I was fully entertained hearing the stories of all the creatures who were in Jaba's palace when Luke arrived. Some of the author's were not that good but in all it is worth a read.

I bought this book as a supplement to my Film Appreciation Class in College. I found it informative, especially if you are a movie buff.

As a professor of cinema studies, I’ve taught film history for almost two decades and have used just about every textbook on the market, including Parkinson’s "History of Film," Mast and Kawin’s "Short History of the Movies," and Wexman’s "History of Film." I consider Dixon and Foster’s book the best short history of film currently available.It offers readers a compact, illuminating tour of film history from its beginnings to the present day that covers major milestones and movements while highlighting important figures marginalized in previous histories of the medium, especially women filmmakers and directors of color.The comparison with Cook’s "History of Narrative Film" made by another reviewer is misleading. It’s a fine book that I own in several editions, but it’s also a lengthy, exhaustive chronicle of film history that runs 22 chapters. It’s suitable for a sequenced, 2-semester course on the history of movies, but overkill for a class running a single semester—as many do. It’s also quite pricey at $80.The advantage of Dixon and Foster’s textbook is that it provides a briefer survey of film history (at 10 chapters) without sacrificing nuance or analytical rigor. Not an easy feat! It’s also far less expensive than Cook’s book in paperback—a boon for students.Could one wish for a more detailed discussion of one’s own favorite filmmakers, movements, or eras? Of course. But that wouldn’t be in keeping with the aim of the book, which is to deliver a short, knowledgeable, and accessible introduction to film history. At this it succeeds admirably.Recommended.

This book is an attempt at nothing less than a history of film, from the beginning to the present.It starts in the beginning, with Thomas Edison and George Melies and the film of the Jules Verne story From the Earth to the Moon (that's the one where the Man In The Moon suddenly gets a spaceship in the eye). From there, the book explores the silent film era, the coming of sound, the patriotic and propaganda films that were produced during World War II, film noir, the sudden freedom in subject matter that happened in the post-war era and French New Wave. The book ends with an exploration of new digital technology, and the fact that films no longer have to be shot on actual film.It also looks at films around the world, during each era, including from countries that were not known for their cinematic output. It also specifically mentions many, many films, some of which are probably gone forever.This book may be a little light in the overall film analysis, but, remember, the title is A Short History of Film, not A Long and Detailed History of Film. For everyone else, this book is very much worth the time. The casual reader and the film lover will learn more than they ever wanted to know about film history.

Democratic capitalism as defined by Novak provides the best opportunities for societies to grow & the people w/in those societies to flourish. Religion, charity, jobs, personal growth all advance due to economic democratic capitalism which provides opportunities for all people at different levels of education or skills, & provides those people the best chance of advancement & financial security.

He doesn't just defend capitalism. He explains positively how it allows freedom for all to advance individually and "pari passu" collectively. He understands the charitable, as opposed to self-promoting electoral interest in "democratic socialism", but wisely explains how state control and planning of all aspects of life and the economy is really undemocratic, incompatible with individual freedom, and ultimately stifling innovation for and forward movement of the commonweal.

Novak's work is a major attempt to reconcile modern discussions of economic and democratic structure with Christian theology. Outcome based, Novak demonstrates why Capitalism is superior to Socialism because of its connection to true democratic thought.

Nkvak brings together the basis of our society as envisioned by the Enlightenment and our founding fathers. The three legs of the stool being democracy, the free market, and Judaeo-Christian values. Although not a perfect system, he argues, it is by far the best man has ever devised for governing and improving himself. Novak lays out his premise and then, for the most part, does a good job of proving and defending it through empirical and philosophical evidence. Good read on America's foundation principals.

Largely a collection of photos of early Southern California skiing in the 20th Century. If you live in the Los Angeles area, this is a nice coffee table addition about the Angeles and San Bernardino mountains (around and South of Big Bear Lake). Most people haven't a clue about how seriously tall these mountains are, and how respectable the tiny ski areas are.The one down side about this book is the lack of inclusion of the San Jacinto Mountains which includes the Palm Springs aerial tramway and the original ski area plans there.

Fantastic historical photos of many Southern California ski areas. (Some no longer in existence.) Brought back many great memories of skiing in Southern California.

I was overjoyed to receive a copy of this book as a present from a friend this weekend.Ms. Wicken has created another excellent treatment of Southern California ski history. It is a noteworthy accompaniment to her previous work (Pray for Snow) that provides further visual record of the development of skiing as a hobby, sport, and ultimately, the commercialization of skiing in Southern California.The book contains sections on skiing in the San Bernardinos, San Gabriels, San Gorgonio, and even skiing without snow (jumping, sand skiing, and Ski Villa). It combines photos of many of the movers-and-shakers in SoCal skiing, as well as the businesses and resorts that they helped start, augmented appropriately by some excellent examples of early SoCal ski advertising (one of my personal favorites). There is also a small section on Eastern Sierra skiing, with some nice images.The author primarily covers the time period of the 1930's through early 1960's, when skiing was still developing. It would be nice to see a further companion piece that includes later ski history (1960s - 2000s). While all ski markets are decreasing over time, skiing is certainly not dead in SoCal. Generations new and old continue to learn and enjoy the hidden gems of skiing in Southern California (San Gorgonio, Mt. Baldy, Mt. Waterman, and maybe someday even Kratka Ridge again!), and it would be nice to see some later history included. A later history must necessarily include snowboarding, which in the last 20 years has helped invigorate snow sports and its corresponding industry in SoCal more than anything else. Focus on a later timeline (1950's and beyond) would also enable the use of color plates to enhance the beauty of this wonderful work; but alas, that doesn't appear to be the focus of the "Images of America" series. It's a real shame that SoCal history couldn't be treated with more color (even Pray for Snow is all black-and-white!)Overall an excellent and much-needed addition to ski and snow sports literature, the history of Southern California and the "Images of America" series.

Purchased in error. THE MOST RIDICULOUS ITEM SOLD ON AMAZON. As I "searched" to find the log out feature, came across this. Clicked on it to see it and it went through as a purchase. The method for logging out on android phone they describe doesn't work. Noted that Amazon seems to have added a log out feature since. I did not return it as it was so cheap but I really felt tricked into this "purchase".

I was not able to log out even after paying for this and reading this!What a scam this turned out to be!
